Concert to feature unusual pieces for trombone

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State University music faculty member Randy Mitchell will perform at 7:30 p.m. today in the Recital Hall of the Landini Center for Performing and Fine Arts at Seventh and Chestnut streets.

The concert, “Odds and Ends, This and That,” will feature unusual pieces for trombone, including works by Samuel Rosseau, Gabriel Faure, Reinhold Gliere, Sigismond Stojowski, Pierre Max Dubois and Friedebald Gräfe.

Mitchell will be accompanied by music faculty member Martha Krasnican on piano.

Mitchell is in his 22nd year on the faculty of the School of Music at Indiana State. He performs as principal trombonist of the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra and the Danville (Ill.) Symphony Orchestra. A member of the ISU Faculty Brass Quintet, he is also an original member of The Ambassador Brass Quintet. He has performed and taught master classes in Germany, Austria, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan and China. As a free-lance musician, he has performed for artists such as Vic Damone, Barbara Eden, Brenda Lee, Boots Randolph, Nancy Wilson, B.J. Thomas, Marilyn McCoo, Billy Davis Jr., Marvin Hamlisch, Crystal Gale and Liza Minnelli among others. Mitchell is a 1974 alumnus of Indiana State and also holds degrees from the University of Louisville and the University of North Texas.

Krasnican is director of the accompanying program at Indiana State. She graduated with distinction from the Eastman School of Music. As a collaborative artist, she has worked with major performers across North America and Europe, including engagements with the Western Horn Symposium and several World Saxophone Congresses. She has performed as soloist in the piano concerto by Vincent Persichetti with the ISU Symphony. She has also performed as a soloist with the Terre Haute Symphony, premiering two piano concertos written for her by her husband, Daniel Powers. She frequently performs in a piano duo with Beverley Simms and both members of the piano/percussion ensemble Cramped Spaces.
