Musicians team up to release album on music of Ireland, British Isles

Release party Saturday

TERRE HAUTE — Solly Burton and B.G. McPike have teamed up again with Fulbright Scholar, folklorist, and Irish whistler extraordinaire, Nan McEntire, to release an album of their own angles on music of Ireland and the British Isles.

A CD release party from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the Coffee Grounds at 423 Wabash Ave., will include music, fun, great desserts and coffee. They will be joined by Winfield National Flatpick Guitar Champion, Andy Hatfield of Peoria, Ill.

Hatfield, who accompanied Burton’s 2011 Champion performances at Winfield also took third prize in the mandolin contest in 2011.

“From Far Beyond the Pond” is the name given for the collection of tunes from Ireland and the British Isles — played from the angle and in the style of three Midwesterners, but informed by the scholarship of McEntire, as well as McEntire’s and McPike’s delving into and arranging the music of these lands across the Atlantic for classical guitar, mandolin and Irish whistle.

The CD includes many long time favorites including: “Londonderry Air” [aka “Danny Boy”]; “Auld Lang Syne’ and Variations” — the Scottish favorite with variations composed by McPike and improvised on by Burton; “Far From Home” — from Shetland; “All through the Night” — from Wales; “Banish Misfortune” — from Ireland; “Across the Universe” — a cover of the Beatles tune; and many others.

The evening will culminate with an acoustic jam fest of some swing, jazz, blues, and even a Brazilian tune or two.

Seating is limited. Cover cost is $6.

CDs will be available after Saturday at Headstone Friends, and at www.cdbaby.com.
