Oncology on Canvas coming to Marshall Public Library

MARSHALL, ILL. — A special exhibit will be on display at the Marshall, Ill., Public Library in August in conjunction with a program by Hux Cancer Center radiation oncologist Dr. Robert Haerr.

Lilly Oncology on Canvas is a biennial art competition and exhibition that honors the journeys people face when confronted with a cancer diagnosis.

The biennial competition invites individuals diagnosed with any type of cancer, as well as their families, friends, caregivers and healthcare providers, to express through art and narrative the life-affirming changes that give their cancer journeys meaning.

Lilly Oncology on Canvas is presented by Lilly Oncology, in partnership with the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship. NCCS is a nonprofit cancer organization that advocates for quality cancer care for all people touched by cancer and provides tools that empower people to advocate for themselves.

Artwork from the 2010 competition is currently touring hospitals, cancer centers and patient advocacy group events.

The exhibit will be on display at the library from Aug. 17-31, with a special reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 18 in the library’s Dale McConchie meeting room.

Also from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 18, Marshall’s Gaslight Art Colony will be featuring the photography of Tom Dagley at its monthly Artist Reception.

The Art Colony is just one block west of the library on Archer Avenue.

Haerr will discuss recent guidelines for breast, cervical and prostate screening and provide updates on advances in prevention of breast cancer, treatment of melanoma, lung cancer and prostate cancer during “Cancer Controversies and Advances” at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 23.

Registration for the program is encouraged; call the library at (217) 826-2535 or email marshallpubliclibrary@gmail.com.

The exhibit and the program are free.
