ISU to host financial literacy workshop for teachers

Event open to educators who incorporate financial education into teaching

TERRE HAUTE — Educators will visit Indiana State University to learn more about financial literacy education for students.

The “Financial Literacy Workshop for Educators” is part of a series of events across the state by the Indiana Jump$tart Coalition, a nonprofit organization that works to improve the personal financial capabilities of children, youth and adults in Indiana.

The workshop, which will run from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 1 in ISU’s Bayh College of Education, is open to all educators and pre-service teachers who incorporate financial education into their teaching. Registration is required.

“We have such a beautiful college in the Bayh College of Education,” said Priscilla Wolfe, director of education for Networks Financial Institute in the Scott College of Business at ISU. NFI is co-sponsoring the event.

“We hope to give them a positive learning and networking experience when they come to campus,” she said.

The workshop will start with a light dinner at 4:30 p.m., and people will learn from organizations that will have table exhibits at the event.

Attendees also will learn about different kinds of insurance that are available, including home, auto and health insurance so they can better teach the subject to their students.

Eric Ogle of the Indiana Department of Education is scheduled to give an update about personal financial responsibility legislation. In Indiana, personal financial literacy is now required to be part of the curriculum for students in grades 6 through 12, said Wolfe, who noted that Ogle is expected to speak about the latest developments with the law and its requirements.

“Educators are refining how they implement these new requirements,” Wolfe said of the law mandating the inclusion of personal financial literacy into the curriculum. “It came into effect in the fall of 2009, so this is the third year that the law has been in place.”

The workshop in Terre Haute is one of three across the state. The first workshop was in Northwest Indiana on Oct. 5; the final workshop will be in Indianapolis on Nov. 2.
