TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute and Vigo County have been in a period of vibrant change in recent years. For those who make this community home and live and work here every day, that change can be viewed in increments. The totality of the change only becomes apparent when stopping to review it over a period of time.
Stepping back on occasion to reflect on the community snapshot is a productive practice. The narrative that emerges from such an exercise tells us where we’ve been, and gives us an indication where we’re going. That’s why the Tribune-Star last year launched what will be an annual project to survey progress and update readers on business activities and developments in the community’s vital economic sectors — industry, commerce, education and health care.
This year’s Community Update — a four-section, 56-page special publication — will be part of your daily newspaper on Saturday. The sections are divided with emphasis on retail/transportation, health care, manufacturing/tourism and education.
The newsroom’s reporters, photographers and editors began working on features for this publication in early August and have compiled a compelling package of articles that detail the wide range of activity that is affecting our local economy. Almost every professional journalist on our editorial staff has contributed in some way to this publication.
In addition, we have received excellent input and cooperation from a variety of community institutions, which contributed greatly to the publication.
We made a special effort to look at the positive impact tourism is having on Terre Haute and Vigo County. That is one area that has seen growth in recent years, and the past year has been no exception. The emergence of the Wabashiki Fish & Wildlife Area promises to be a major new visitor draw for the community, as does the introduction of Prospect League baseball with the arrival of the Terre Haute Rex and major renovation to Bob Warn Field at Sycamore Stadium.
The sales staff and leaders in our advertising department worked closely with local businesses, industries and institutions to make the section possible. Much of the display advertising that will appear comes from nontraditional advertisers, who are taking the opportunity to be part of this effort to tell the many community success stories that sometimes go unnoticed or are taken for granted.
Publisher B.J. Riley said a great deal of energy and excitement went into producing this year’s special section and he’s anxious to share it with the newspaper’s community of readers.
“This edition allows us to showcase our talents at the Tribune-Star with a product that showcases Terre Haute and the Wabash Valley,” Riley said. “I am extremely proud of the effort that everyone here has given and I hope the community loves this edition as much as I do.”
Keep your eyes peeled for the inserted section on Saturday. Then take some time to look it over, devour the content and join us in reflecting on the community’s past year and prospects for the coming year.

We peacefully coexisted with that strategy for a couple of decades.
