TERRE HAUTE —
A four-time county champion who won 41 of her 42 high school golf matches has signed her national letter-of-intent to attend Indiana State, beginning with the fall 2013 semester, according to Indiana State women’s coach Greg Towne.
Megan Berube, Spring Hill, Fla., a versatile student-athlete at Franks Springstead High School in Brooksville, Fla., signed Wednesday.
“Megan excels in everything she does,” Towne said. “She is coming from a highly competitive environment in Florida where there are plenty of good players. To be medalist in 41 out of 42 matches is pretty incredible.”
Berube became the first female high school golfer to win four straight Hernando County championships with her victory at the 2012 championships in October. She also won the county title twice in middle school running her winning streak to six straight county championships.
She has been playing golf since she was 8 and played against boys while on the boys team through middle school. Berube led her middle school team to three undefeated seasons and three county championships.
Berube was captain of her high school team two years and led Springstead High School to 30 straight divisional wins with three straight undefeated seasons and four county championships. The team was district champions twice and runner-up once, and competed in the regionals the past two seasons. She competed in the state tournament as a sophomore and placed 14th out of 98 individuals.
Her ability on the golf course led to Berube being named Hernando County Most Valuable Player for three straight years with the 2012 awards yet to be announced. She was also named the Player of the Year twice in the North Suncoast Conference while also being named first-team all-conference for three straight years. The 2012 awards have not been announced yet.
Berube also excels in music and theatre as she appeared in a number of musicals, is a member of the Springstead High School chorus, and performed eight solo performances during her high school career.
“To be so skilled in music, theater and golf is a testament to the way she practices and her focus,” Towne said. “Megan has the desire to play golf after college and she feels like the training she will receive here will give her that opportunity. I can see Megan making an impact in the MVC in her first year.”
Berube also has experience competing on several tours, including the Florida Women’s Golf Association Tour, Florida Junior Tour, Hurricane Tour, Premier Tour, Greater Tampa Bay Golf Association Tour, and the Nature Suncoast Junior Golf Association Tour. She tied for third out of 44 individuals at the 2012 Florida Junior Girls Championships and placed 12th out of 67 competitors at the 2012 Florida State Associations Women’s Stroke Play Championships after tying for 22nd at the 2011 championships.

Also representing The Woods, Casandra Barrett placed 15th. Others who finished for the Pomeroys were Lauren Sutton, Sarah Hudson, Corianna Frederick, Nicole Myers and Jennifer Hughes.
“The ladies worked so hard for it and they all ran amazing, pouring their heart and soul into the race,” SMWC coach Danelle Readinger said. “With that, we brought home second place, which is huge with the level of competition we had. The team was so united, strong, and their effort all year really proved itself. I could not be more proud of them and I feel blessed to coach these amazing girls.”
