METRO ROUNDUP: ISU track athlete selected as MVC scholar-athlete of week

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State senior Ernest Rollins has been selected the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week it was announced Friday.

Rollins was honored for his performance during the period of Jan. 30-Feb. 5.

A member of the ISU men’s track and field team, Rollins established a personal best when he soared 51 feet, 1 3/4 inches to place second out of 23 competitors in the triple jump at the Meyo Invitational on Feb. 3 in South Bend.

Rollins, who has a 3.77 cumulative grade-point average in communications, posted the third-best effort in Indiana State history and recorded his second 50-plus-feet performance of the season. He owns the top 2012 distance in the league by nearly two feet and ranks 18th nationally.

He is the second member of the Sycamore men’s track and field team to be honored this season as Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Senior Jeremiah Vaughan received the honor on Jan. 24. Three other Sycamores have been honored during the 2011-2012 academic year including soccer’s Emily Lahay on Sept. 7, women’s basketball player Shannon Thomas on Dec. 7 and men’s basketball player Jordan Printy on Dec. 22.

Basketball

• Special occasion — More than 40 Wabash Valley cancer survivors will be recognized prior to today’s 1 p.m. women’s game between Rose-Hulman and Defiance College in Hulbert Arena.

The teams will compete in the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Day game. Pregame festivities, featuring the introduction of area and Rose community cancer survivors, will take place at about 12:40 p.m.

Rose-Hulman will be selling T-shirts at the game for $12, with all proceeds being presented to the local Wabash Valley Cancer Survivors Organization. Admission is available for $5 and all gate receipts will be donated to the effort.

Rose joins more than 5,000 college and high school campuses participating in Pink Zone activities this year. The Engineers have raised more than $7,500 for the Wabash Valley Cancer Survivors Organization and hope to repeat the effort this weekend.

The Wabash Valley Cancer Survivors organization helps individuals offset the cost of mammograms as well as providing research for the prevention and treatment of cancer.

Auto racing

• Gardner prevails — At Ocala, Fla., Damion Gardner was a double winner Thursday in the first U.S. Auto Club sprint car race of the season in Bubba’s Winter Dirt Games at Bubba Raceway Park.

Gardner won his heat and took the 30-lap feature, leading the final 25 turns. Jon Stanbrough took second and Brady Bacon, who led the first five laps, was third.

Blake Fitzpatrick placed 14th and Chase Stockon 18th in the main event.

Racing continued Friday and winds up tonight.
