Metro Roundup: Junior boys golf championships start today

West Lafayette — Match play begins today in the junior boys golf championships at the Purdue Kampen Course.

Thomas Goss of Terre Haute qualified for the championship division and will play Thomas Cameron in his first match today.

• Turpen fourth — At Vincennes, Mitch Blackburn won the Vincennes Open that concluded Sunday at the Country Club of Old Vincennes.

Blackburn shot 135 to win the event, finishing two shots ahead of Chris Taylor of Linton with 137. Rick Leonard had 138 for third and Travis Turpen of Terre Haute took fourth with rounds of 69 and 71 for 140.

Eddie Kanizer of Clinton shot 150 and Denny Byram of Clinton had 156 in the championship flight.

Baseball

• Pate advances — At Rockport, Evansville Pate won the American Legion regional tournament played at Rockport to advance to the state finals.

Pate defeated Princeton 4-2 in the championship game and will meet the Muncie Regional winner at 4 p.m. Thursday in the state finals at Plymouth.
