METRO ROUNDUP: Kiwanis Club hands out Eddie Connors Awards

TERRE HAUTE — The Kiwanis Club of Greater Terre Haute announced this week that 14 eighth-graders were recipients of the 2012 Eddie Connors Awards.

The 50th annual awards are designed to recognize leadership skills and academic, as well as athletic, excellence in middle school students.

Begun in 1962 by those who remembered the effect that Connors had on young people in the Terre Haute community and the time he spent coaching and mentoring youth, the awards are presented each year to pupils who have displayed outstanding sportsmanship, loyalty, courtesy, ability and motivation.

This year’s winners were Macie Taylor and Douglas Griffie, Chauncey Rose; Riley Davis and Chase Dinkel, Honey Creek; Keeliegh Stigall and Joshua Schefke, Otter Creek; Ty’Raja Brown and Alberto Piloni, Sarah Scott; Margaret Mary McMurtry and Jonathan Sutterer, St. Patrick’s; Madison Funk and Jacob Weir, West Vigo; and Meredith Egan and Jay Beddow, Woodrow Wilson.

Awards were presented Wednesday in the City Hall courtroom with Mayor Duke Bennett in attendance.

Golf

n ISU signs two — Indiana State women’s coach Greg Towne announced this week that two Indiana high school athletes have signed their national letters-of-intent to join his team.

Bailey Craft of South Vermillion and Shelby Williams of Plainfield each signed and have been accepted into ISU, beginning with the fall semester.

Craft won the Western Indiana Conference (WIC) championship in 2010 and 2011 while posting a high school record of 33-4. She was named All-WIC three times, was sectional runner-up in 2010 and 2011 and competed in the regional three times. A four-year letter winner in golf, she was captain of her team for three years.

Williams is a four-year varsity letter recipient while competing at Plainfield. She was the team’s Most Valuable Player twice and was named All-County for three years. Williams was the county champion in 2011 and placed in the top 30 at the 2010 state championship.

Track

n Sycamores honored — Indiana State seniors Ernest Rollins and Nicole Hope have been selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America Capital One Academic All-District V Track & Field team, according to an announcement released this week.

Rollins was named to the men’s District V first team, while Hope was named to the women’s District V second team.

Rollins, a senior from Bridgetown, Barbados, has a 3.73 grade-point average  while majoring in communication.

He won the Missouri Valley Conference outdoor championship this year to earn his third straight All-Conference recognition.

Rollins was recently named to the MVC Track & Field Scholar Athlete team for the third straight year. He is now eligible for the Capital One Academic All-America team, which will be voted on later this month.

Hope, a senior from Wilmington, Ohio, has a 3.65 GPA while majoring in exercise science. She missed the outdoor season with an injury but was named a second-team All-American in the women’s pole vault by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association  after a 13th-place finish in the 2012 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

n Evans honored again — Rose-Hulman junior Liz Evans earned first-team NCAA Division III Capital One academic all-district seven team honors, according to results released this week by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Evans received first-team academic all-district honors after a season that featured her fourth consecutive women’s high-jump national championship.

In the classroom, the mathematics and electrical-engineering double major carries a 3.50 grade-point average.
