Metro Roundup: ISU women’s soccer makes it 2 shutout victories in a row

TERRE HAUTE — Junior goalkeeper Emily Lahay and the Indiana State women’s soccer team tallied their second consecutive shutout victory on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium, dropping visiting IPFW 2-0.

Indiana State (2-2) scored one goal in each half, breaking the scoreless game in the 31st minute. Morgan Wendlandt gave ISU the lead with a free kick from 25 yards out, slipping the ball just under the crossbar and off the outstretched hands of the IPFW goalkeeper.

The Sycamores added to their lead in the 72nd minute, thanks to the quickness of Alison Gasparovich. She stole the ball from the IPFW midfielders and slashed her way through the entire Mastodon backline before hitting a left-footed shot past the keeper from 10 yards out.

ISU played solid defense Sunday, allowing only eight shots; Lahay did not have to make a save. The shutout was the second consecutive one this season for the Sullivan High School graduate and her sixth career clean sheet.

The Sycamore backline, consisting of Katie Geyman, Wendlandt, Casey Allbright, Autumn Jacobs and Shelby Troyer, consistently turned away attacking plays by IPFW and forced the majority of IPFW’s eight shots to come from beyond 25 yards from goal.

Indiana State has another home match next Sunday, a 1 p.m. contest against Eastern Illinois.

Golf

• Kyle, Hess win — At Clinton, four playoffs were needed to decide final positions and payouts in the Byram-Kruse two-man scramble concluded Sunday at Geneva Hills.

Bob Kyle and Scott Hess needed two extra holes to win the title, beating J.P. Kanizer and Josh Morgan in the playoff.

Both teams carded 19-under-par 125 scores with Kyle and Hess shooting 60 on Sunday, the low score of the event.

Ryan and Greg Luce bested Russ Campbell and Randy Kruse in a one-hole playoff to win the first flight.

Denny Byram and Butch Graham won the second flight, defeating Mark Lowry and Jordan Lowry in a nine-hole playoff.

A three-hole playoff was needed to decide second place in the third flight.

• President’s Cup, and an ace — At the Country Club of Terre Haute, Lou Harmening was the winner Sunday in the annual President’s Cup tournament, a 36-hole net play event.

Arnie Brames recorded his first career hole-in-one during the tournament on the 16th hole, a shot witnessed by Pat Cahill and Mike Goeller.

Football

• Wildcats post shutout — At Brazil, the West Central Wildcats improved their Interstate Football League record to 7-1 Saturday night by blanking the Kosciusko County Mustangs 10-0.

Mike Landry scored on a 65-yard run on the first series for the Wildcats, freezing the defense with a play fake and racing untouched to the end zone. Chad Schopmeyer added a clinching 10-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter after Landry and running back Corey Grigsby had led a drive that stalled at the 1-yard line.

The Wildcats begin postseason play with a home game Sept. 11 against the Ohio Outlawz.

 Volleyball

• ISU falls to Cardinals, blanks The Citadel — At Edwardsville, Ill., Indiana State struggled to find their momentum Saturday morning, falling to Ball State 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-18) in the second round of the SIU-E Cougar Classic.

The Sycamores then closed out the weekend by defeating The Citadel 25-14, 25-18, 26-24 in a later game that day.

Morgan Dall led the Sycamores with 11 kills while Ana Maira Charun added eight kills and Stacy Qualizza seven kills and five blocks against Ball State. Shelbi Fouty had 17 assists and Kiya James 10 digs.

Auriel Armstrong had career highs of 11 kills, 18 attack attempts and a .444 attack percentage in the later victory. Dall added nine kills and Charun seven, Loni Mackinson had 19 assists, Fouty 12 assists and 14 digs and Armstrong and Mackinson four blocks each.

Now 2-1, the Sycamores play Tuesday at IUPUI.

Racing

• Hendrick wins — At Bloomington Speedway, Jonathan Hendrick was one of the double winners in racing Friday.

The 19-year-old driver won his heat and the main event for sprint cars with Brady Short second and Jerry Coons Jr. third.

Other winners were Randy Petro in super stocks and John DeMoss in UMP modifieds.

Next racing at the track will be Sept. 17 with a Midwest Sprint Car Series feature.

• Tewell posts win — Mike Tewell was one of the winners in regular points racing Saturday at Crossroads Dragway.

Tewell bested Tony Price to win in pro class. Other winners were Paul Thompson, Chad Eaton, and Kevin Meredith in a special diesel class.

Fun Night runs are Friday with regular racing Saturday. Time runs are at 11:30 a.m. with eliminations at 2:30 p.m. Track information is available at www.crossroadsdragway.com.

• Clauson wins — At Sun Prairie, Wis., Bryan Clauson was the feature winner in the U.S. Auto Club Hall of Fame Classic for midget cars at Angell Park Speedway.

Clauson led the final nine laps to win the 30-lap main event. Jerry Coons Jr. led the first 21 turns and took second.

Zach Daum flipped in the feature and was taken to a hospital for observation and treatment.

Sprint car racing will be the feature on this week's card followed by a fireworks show. USAC sprint cars will be at the track Sept. 10.
