OOLITIC —
Edgewood captured its first Western Indiana Conference girls high school golf championship Saturday.
The Mustangs shot 382 in the 18-hole tournament played in warm but pleasant conditions at Stone Crest Golf Club.
Prior to Saturday, Northview had been the only school to win a girls golf title in the conference. This time, the Knights carded 400 to edge South Vermillion by one stroke for runner-up honors.
Sullivan shot 439 to take fourth followed by Owen Valley (445) and West Vigo (481).
South Vermillion junior Bailey Craft was medalist with 81. She had one birdie in her round, going 39-43 for her score.
Craft was third in the WIC tournament her freshman year and did not play last year due to injury.
Senior Hayley Miller of Northview was second medalist, shooting 85, and junior Abby Abel of Edgewood was third low with 91.
The top 11 players earned all-conference honors and will be recognized at the fall sports banquet.
Edgewood was the only team to have three players under 100 in winning the title and four Mustangs earned all-conference honors. Sam Faletic had 92 and Carlie Green 94.
Gary Lawson is coach of the conference champs. Two seniors, two juniors and one sophomore made up the tournament roster.
Edgewood will be in Terre Haute on Monday to play South at Rea Park.
Miller and Macie Lynch with 100 led Northview.
“I was pleased with the way Hayley and Macie came back and played the back nine. Some of our players lost momentum on the back. It’s not a bad score, [but] we need to improve to be successful,” said Northview coach Josh Trout.
Craft and Bailey Mack with 98 led South Vermillion.
“Having two players make all-conference is very good for us. We are very young and third is about the best we could expect,” said SV coach J.T. Roberts.
His team and Northview could challenge for third place again next month in the sectional behind Terre Haute North and South at Forest Park.
Sullivan was without Leslie Lindsay, out with an illness. She usually is its No. 1 scorer.
Lara Benningfield with 101 and Erin Hazelrigg with 105 led the Arrows and earned all-conference honors. Alex Thompson just missed with 106.
Sullivan coach Doug Boyd was pleased.
“I’m tickled to death to have two players make all-conference and another just miss by one shot. Fourth was a realistic goal for us with Leslie out of the lineup,” he said.
Ciara McClain and Kristina Smith each shot 112 to lead West Vigo. The Vikings will be host team at River Bend for the county match Thursday.
