TERRE HAUTE — Jamie Petrowski and Steve Weatherford played their high school football at Terre Haute North Vigo and went their separate ways to play collegiately. Now they both have a chance to play in the National Football League.
After finishing up as a tight end for Indiana State, Petrowski signed a free-agent contract with the Tennessee Titans late Monday night. And Weatherford, a standout punter and kicker at the University of Illinois, signed a free-agent contract with the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
Petrowski started his college career at Purdue, before transferring to ISU.
He was one of 20 undrafted free agents to sign with the Titans and is the second Sycamore to sign with the Titans organization in the last four years. Defensive tackle Richard Harris signed with Tennessee in 2003.
A first team all-conference as well as academic all-conference selection, Petrowski was second on the team with 57 pass receptions for 513 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His 57 pass receptions eclipsed the previous school record for catches in a season, which was also broken last year by wide receiver Sam Logan.
He caught a season-long 33-yard pass from Phillip Johnson, as he was on the receiving end of a pair of fake punt passes against Western Kentucky. Petrowski caught a season-best 10 passes for 133 yards against the Hilltoppers and hauled in at least two passes in each game during the 2005 season.
Petrowski was named a Third Team All-American by The Sports Network as well as The Associated Press.
The former tight end is the first Sycamore since 2004 to sign an NFL free agent contract, when offensive lineman Matt Griebel inked a deal with the Indianapolis Colts.
Weatherford wrapped up four seasons as the starting punter for the Illini this season, finishing his career as the school’s record holder for punting average as well as single-season average leader. This season, he earned second-team All-Big Ten Conference honors, after being named first-team in 2004. Weatherford joins former Illinois assistant coach Greg McMahon in the Crescent City.

n Fish top finisher — Tim Fish was a top finisher in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s golf championships contested last week.
Playing for Franklin College, the Linton graduate carded 145 to tie for third in the event played at Seymour.
Franklin took team honors. Franklin’s John Lett was medalist with 143.

n Jones, Brown tie for 7th — At Indianapolis, Dave Brown and Tom Jones of Terre Haute tied for seventh in the Mid-Amateur Team Championship played this week.
Brown and Jones finished with a 2-under-par 142 score with rounds of 75 and 67 at The Fort Golf Club to tie Mike Bell and David Hagan for seventh place.
Skip Runnels and Randy Nichols carded a 7-under-par 137 to defeat two other teams by two strokes.
Steve Paquin and Alan Buell finished at 153 in the two-day event played in windy, cold conditions.

n WV United wins three times — Wabash Valley United U12 defeated Fishers Soccer Club twice (7-1 and 1-0) on Saturday, then completed a perfect 3-0 home weekend with a 6-3 victory over the Frankfort Cosmos. Josh Pigg had a hat trick in Sunday’s win.

n Flyers U17 win pair — The U17 Terre Haute Flyers boys team posted two wins, defeating the Greenfield Strikers 3-2 on Saturday, then blanking the Muncie Stars 8-0 on Sunday.
Against Greenfield, Zach Pigg (assisted by Matt Polky) and Tyler Loges (on a pass from John Latta) tallied a goal each in the first half. Ryan Hauberstadt, assisted by Joe Welch, closed out the scoring.
Against Muncie, the Flyers had first half scoring provided by Hauberstadt and Pigg with assists from Travis Glascock and Greg Lilly, respectively. In the second half, Hauberstadt scored twice more from Patrick Martin and Glascock passes. Also scoring goals were Polky, Martin, and Rafe Koehler-Derrick (from Martin).
Goalkeeper Taylor Montague recorded the shutout on Sunday.
The Flyers (3-2) host the Rowdies United team on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds.
