Metro Roundup: Leonard’s 23 lead Robinson boys past Lawrenceville

Robinson, Ill. — Host Robinson shot 69 percent from the floor and scored 57 first-half points Friday night in opening its high school boys basketball season with an 88-47 rout of Lawrenceville.

University of Illinois recruit Meyers Leonard had 23 points, four rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots for the Maroons, who also got 19 points from Derek Hannahs, 12 each from Ben Jones and Cody Chamblin and 10 from Devan Dirks.

Nick Potts had 16 points and a game-high seven rebounds for the Indians.

Girls basketball

• Marshall falls to Mount Carmel — At Robinson, Ill., Marshall fell behind 8-0 at the outset, then scored just seven points in the second half to fall to Mount Carmel 43-34 in the Robinson Thanksgiving Tournament for girls high school basketball on Friday.

Freshman Ariana Kuhn had a game high 15 points, and Adrienne Strohm chipped in nine points for Marshall. Sara Stoltz had 17 and Emily Brown added 11 to lead Mount Carmel.

Auto racing

• Clauson, Kuhn win — At Irwindale, Calif., Bryan Clauson and Brad Kuhn were winners in U. S. Auto Club midget racing Thursday at Toyota Speedway.

Clauson led the final 57 laps to win the 98-lap Turkey Night Grand Prix feature with Levi Roberts second and Josh Wise third. Wise was fast qualifier and led the first 41 laps.

Brad Kuhn was 28th and wrapped up the midget championship for 2009, finishing eight points ahead of Brad Sweet.
