TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State basketball players dominated Missouri Valley Conference weekly awards announced Monday, with Kelsey Luna winning her second straight Player of the Week honor on the women’s side and Dwayne Lathan earning Newcomer of the Week honors for the men’s team.
Luna shot 50 percent from the field (13 of 26 field goals, 8 of 16 3-pointers) and was a perfect 16 for 16 from the charity stripe, averaging 25 points per game in wins over Furman and South Carolina Upstate.
She scored 17 points in 31 minutes Thursday, leading Indiana State to a 62-47 win at Furman, and also had career highs in three categories with eight rebounds, six assists and eight steals against the Paladins.
On Saturday at USC Upstate, Luna secured the Sycamores’ 80-72 win by making eight straight free throws in the final minute of play and finishing with 33 points on the day. She was a perfect 12 for 12 from the charity stripe and added seven rebounds, four steals and three assists over 37 minutes.
Now 3-0, ISU’s women have their home opener at 6 p.m. today against Southeast Missouri State.
Lathan paced the men’s team by averaging 14.7 points per game and was also the team’s leading rebounder with a 5.3 average in Preseason NIT games at LSU against the Tigers and Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a home game Friday against Colorado State.
Lathan was perfect from the field against LSU and Milwaukee, hitting all 10 of his field goal attempts. He ended the three-game stretch with a .762 field goal percentage, hitting 16 of 21 shots. He also was effective at the free throw line, hitting 11 of 14 for a .786 percentage and added four assists, a blocked shot and a pair of steals.
He led ISU to a 65-60 victory over Colorado State by scoring 18 points, including a trio of highlight-reel dunks in transition. Lathan posted 14 points against Milwaukee and had 12 points, all in the second half, against LSU.
Indiana State played Monday against Coastal Carolina and will battle Western Kentucky tonight at Bowling Green, Ky.
• Martin earns HCAC honor — Terre Haute North graduate Molly Martin of Hanover was women’s basketball Player of the Week for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
She averaged 25 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in leading the Panthers to wins over Kalamazoo, 71-53 on Saturday, and Ohio Northern, 89-64 on Sunday.
Martin had a career-high 32 points against Ohio Northern and shot 55 percent from the field (22 of 40) in the two games.
• South boys opener postponed — The high school boys opener for Terre Haute South, originally scheduled this Saturday, has been postponed until Dec. 12.
Evansville Reitz, the Braves’ opponent, is playing in the Class 4A football championship game on Saturday.
• Cumberland 35, Marshall 31 — At Marshall, Ill., Shelby Sandefer had eight points to lead Marshall, which couldn’t hold on to a 19-13 halftime lead.

• Warriors, Lions honored — Taylor Duncan of Marshall and Dalton Brooke of Casey have been named Class 2A first-team all-state selections by the Illinois Football Coaches Association.
Josh Thais of Casey made the second team, and two more Warriors — Chris Unzicker and Clinton Scott — made the academic all-state team.
