Metro Roundup: Rose men’s hoops starts strong, but falls to University of Chicago

Chicago

The University of Chicago overcame a strong start by Rose-Hulman to earn a 79-60 men’s college basketball victory in the championship game of the Midway Classic on Sunday.

John Kinsella and Steve Stefanou led the victorious Maroons with 16 points. The Maroons shot 45 percent from the field and buried 14 3-pointers at a 50-percent clip.

Terre Haute South graduate Spencer Harlan established a career high in scoring for the second straight day with 17 points for Rose-Hulman. Harlan finished 8 for 13 from the field and contributed six rebounds.

Jeff McCartney narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Austin Weatherford also pitched in with nine points for the Engineers. Other key contributors included Nate Gissentanner with eight points and a career-high six assists and Jason Haslag with six points and five rebounds.

For their efforts on the weekend, Harlan and Haslag were honored with spots on the Midway Classic all-tournament team.

The Engineers jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and held the Maroons without a field goal for the first four minutes before Chicago used a 15-2 spurt to gain a 20-12 lead with 7:30 left in the opening half. McCartney buried two three-point shots and Haslag added a field goal in the early run.

Chicago continued to maintain a steady margin and built a 37-22 halftime advantage. In the second half, Rose-Hulman was able to close within 11 points on two occasions but could not overcome a balanced scoring attack from the winners.

• Marshall 46, Lawrenceville 45 — The Lions, playing their third game in 24 hours, were outscored 11-5 in the fourth quarter but held on.

Shelby Sandefer had 14 points and Adrienne Strohm 12, while Emily Bishop had nine rebounds and Bailey Lycan eight.

Audrey Metheny and Katie Sapp scored 19 and 12 respectively for the Indians.

Volleyball

• Sycamores fight hard, reach milestones in finale — In the ISU Arena, Indiana State used Senior NIght momentum to win the first set against powerful Wichita State on Saturday but lost the Missouri Valley Conference match 21-25, 25-12, 25-18, 25-14.

Whitney Fromm, Kristen Kerscher, Jodilynne Stoker, Stephanie Volden and Kelli Whitaker were honored in pre-game ceremonies for the Sycamores, 7-25 overall and 3-15 in the MVC.

Stoker’s seventh kill of the match closed out the first set and also gave her 1,000 for her career; she finished with 15 for the match and 1,008 for her career, 10th on the ISU all-time list. Stoker was also fourth all-time in attacks with 3,502 and her 1,033 attempts this year was 10th on the single-season list.

Fromm’s 37 assists gave her 912 for the season and 2,979 for her career, third-best among all Sycamores. Volden had two blocks and finished eighth all-time in blocks and block assists and seventh in total blocks.

Sophomore Kiya James also reached a milestone with 16 digs, giving her 527 for the season, third-best in school history.

Stacey Qualizza added 10 kills for the match.
