Metro Roundup: Rose-Hulman women’s hoops falls to 0-2

Wilmington, Ohio — Rose-Hulman shot 52 percent from the field in the second half to close within seven points, but Marian held off the rally to earn a 60-50 women’s basketball win in the third place game of the Wilmington Inn/Damon’s Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday.

Donna Marsh led three Rose players in double figures with 15 points in a balanced scoring attack. Marsh added four rebounds, two blocks, two assists and three steals.

Eli Baca pitched in with 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Alisa Dickerson added 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Theresa Fairbrother led Marian with 19 points, including five 3-point shots. Nikki Schmidt also reached double figures with 11 points.

Marian jumped out to an early 17-6 lead and pushed its first half lead to 16 points, before a three-point play by Marsh and a three-point field goal by Dickerson brought the Engineers within 31-23.

In the second half, the Knights lead reached 17 points, before Rose moved within 48-41 with 8:11 left. Marsh scored four straight points, then Baca hit a pair of free throws to cap the rally.

Marian withstood the streak with eight points of its own to push the lead to 60-45, before another trey by Dickerson and a score by Marsh brought Rose-Hulman within the final margin.

The Engineers stand 0-2 on the season and return to action next Saturday against No. 1-ranked and defending national runner-up Washington University of St. Louis.

Cross country

• Lakers fifth — At Evansville, Grand Valley State placed fifth Saturday in the NCAA Division II championships hosted by the University of Southern Indiana.

Shakamak graduate Anthony Witt of Grand Valley placed 53rd in a time of 32:49.3.

Swimming

• Rose competes in Wabash Invitational — At Crawfordsville, Rose-Hulman swimmers and divers combined for 13 top eight finishes at one of the nation’s most competitive meets, the Wabash Invitational, on Friday and Saturday.

The meet featured nationally ranked squads in DePauw, Wheaton and Carthage, along with NCAA Division II Indianapolis and host Wabash.

Senior diver Michael Gerdov led the Engineers with victories in the one- and three-meter diving competitions. Gerdov tallied 254.70 points in one-meter diving and 236.25 in the three-meter event.

On the women’s side, Nicole Richardson tallied a third-place finish in one-meter diving with 104.15 points. Senior Mark Parzych rounded out a strong team diving effort with a fifth in one-meter diving with 216.15 points.

The relay teams combined for four top-five finishes to lead the swimming effort. The tandem of freshman Matt Ross, sophomore Ben Sollman, freshman Michael Yuhas and senior Brian Yount placed fourth in the 800-freestyle in 8:02.44 to pace the relay performance.

The men’s 200-yard medley relay team added a fifth place finish in 1:42.85. Team members included Sollman, freshman Patrick DeJarnatt, Ross and Yount.

Two women’s relay teams each placed fifth to pace the Engineers.
