Wilmington College, one of the top teams in the Midwest Region, relied on a balanced scoring attack to top the Rose-Hulman women’s basketball team 61-37 in the season opener for both colleges on Friday night.
Allie Meranda led the Quakers with 12 points and preseason All-American Kortney Kin added 11 points.
Sophomore Alisa Dickerson joined junior Nicole Klass with nine points each to lead the Engineer effort. Dickerson contributed 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Junior Eli Baca pitched in with 10 rebounds, and junior Donna Marsh added four points, five rebounds and four blocked shots.
Wilmington, which returns all five starters from a team that finished 19-8 last season, held the Engineers to 30 percent shooting to build a 33-13 halftime lead. The Engineer offense showed a spark in the second half, improving to 39 percent from the field and 38 percent from 3-point range.
Rose-Hulman returns to action against the loser of tonight’s matchup between Calvin College and Marian College at 1 p.m. today in the third-place game of the Wilmington Invitational.

n ISU falls to MSU — Indiana State went toe-to-toe with the Missouri State Bears on Friday in the ISU Arena but could not come up with a victory, falling to the Bears 3-0 (20-25, 20-25, 21-25) in a Missouri Valley Conference match.
Indiana State will conclude the 2009 season tonight against the Wichita State Shockers at 7 p.m. It will be “Senior Night” for the Sycamores with Whitney Fromm, Kristen Kerscher, Jodilynne Stoker, Stephanie Volden, and Kelli Whitaker playing their final game in an Indiana State uniform. Each will be honored in pre-game ceremonies.
Stoker inched closer to the magic 1,000-kill mark Friday night, leading Indiana State with nine kills to give her 993 kills for her career. Freshman Morgan Dall contributed eight kills with sophomore Stacy Qualizza knocking down seven.
Fromm recorded her 15th double-double of the season and her fifth straight with 28 assists and 13 digs. She now has 31 double-double games in her career. Sophomore Kiya James went over 500 digs for the season, recording a team high 15 Friday to give her 511 for the season.
Indiana State (7-24, 3-14 MVC) plays Wichita State (22-5, 13-5) tonight.
