TERRE HAUTE — Four members of the 2009 Indiana State University women’s soccer team have been named to the 2009 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete team.
Senior midfielder Erin Bianchi, sophomore midfielder Alison Gasparovich and sophomore defender Morgan Wendlandt were named to the first team. Senior forward Katlin Owens was named honorable mention.
Bianchi, who currently holds a perfect 4.0 GPA in nursing, has been named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete team every time she has been eligible, earning honorable-mention status as a sophomore and first-team selections as both a junior and a senior.
Gasparovich currently holds a 3.89 GPA in nursing. Wendlandt carries a perfect 4.0 GPA in marketing. Owens was a second team all-conference selection and holds a 3.43 GPA in Exercise Science.
Basketball
n Pomeroys drop opener — At Elgin, Ill., St. Mary-of-the-Woods stayed close for a half before being defeated 99-59 by Aquinas in the first game of the season for SMWC.
Brittany Shaner led the Pomeroys with 24 points and nine rebounds, while Chesey Barron scored 11. Aquinas is ranked 17th in the NAIA poll.

Auto racing
n Whitt, Santos winners — At Phoenix, Ariz., Cole Whitt and Bobby Santos III were winners Thursday in the Copper World Classic at Phoenix International Raceway.
Whitt took the lead on the 18th lap and led the rest of the way to win the 100-lap feature for U. S. Auto Silver Crown cars. Kody Swanson was second and Tracy Hines third.
Bud Kaeding took eighth in the final SC event of the season and wrapped up his third Silver Crown title.
Santos outdueled Bryan Clauson to win the 25-lap feature for midgets.
Brad Kuhn was fourth and has a 40-point lead over Brad Sweet going into a race next week in California.
