Metro Roundup: The Woods soccer falls in national title game

Burlington, Vt. — St. Mary-of-the-Woods didn’t in the national championship, but coach Mike Aycock won’t complain about the effort by his team to finish as national runner-up with a 3-0 loss Sunday to Marygrove College.

The Pomeroys, who were seeded eighth in the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, qualified for the tournament based on a solid strength of schedule.

Terre Haute North graduate Erin Pugh was named to the all-tournament team along with goalkeeper April Baranowski.

Arrika Garcia was named an honorable-mention All-American.

“It’s our first time to get a bid into the final eight,” Aycock said. “It was a good performance for these girls. They really stepped up and accomplished something we’ve never accomplished before.”
