METRO ROUNDUP: Curley picks up pole vault victory

TERRE HAUTE — Two members of the Wabash Valley Pole Vault Club fared well in the USA Track & Field Indiana Association championships Saturday.

Connor Curley, a 2012 graduate of Terre Haute North High School and future member of the Indiana State University men’s track team, won the young men’s division (ages 17-18) in the pole vault by clearing 15 feet.

Willie Lower, another recent North graduate, placed fourth in the young men’s division by succeeding at 11 feet.

Both qualified for the national regional July 6-7 at Franklin College.

Golf

• Granda runner-up — At Noblesville, Andrew Granda, 11, of Terre Haute, finished second with a par-70 in the Pepsi/Aquafina Junior Golf Tour in the age 10-11 age division at Forrest Park Course on Friday.  

Granda finished one stroke behind Peyton Snoeberger of Williampsort, in a field of 16 golfers.

• Freebirds — At Idle Creek, the following are results of the Freebirds outing Friday:



Gross

57 — Jim Evans, Tim Fortune, Chris Dehart, Ken Sproul.

58 — Jim Davis, Travis Inman, Eli Beck, Allen Hauger.

Proximity winners

Closest to pin — Dehart (No. 3), Jerome Trierwiler (No. 12).

Longest drive — Trierwiler (No. 15).



• Shipley hole-in-one — At The Landing, Lee Shipley made the second hole-in-one of the year and third of his career Saturday. He used a pitching wedge on the 90-yard eighth hole.

Witnessing the shot were P.Ralston, M.Webster, J.Bukovak and M.Wagle.

Auto racing

• Jones wins — At Bloomington Speedway, Levi Jones was the winner in Indiana Midget Week action Friday.

Jones led all the way in winning the 30-lap feature with Jerry Coons Jr. second and Shane Cottle third.

Darren Hagen was fourth and hiked his lead in the U. S. Auto Club midget point totals to 128 over Bobby East.

Midget Week continued Saturday at Lawrenceburg Speedway and winds up today at Kokomo Speedway.
