Metro Roundup: 5-0 Rose volleyball off to best start in program’s history

Eureka, Ill. — Rose-Hulman’s volleyball team has recorded its best start to a season in program history with a 5-0 record after earning two three-set victories at the Eureka Invitational on Sunday.

Rose-Hulman defeated Stephens College 25-11, 25-12, 25-12 in the opener, then topped Robert Morris-Springfield 25-23, 25-15, 25-17 in the nightcap.

Against Stephens, Anna Lewer led a balanced Rose-Hulman attack with seven kills, 10 digs and three service aces. Karah Hickman also had seven kills, with Casey Levitt contributing six kills and seven digs.

Leah Pelzel and Kira Boswell provided passing support with 17 and 12 assists, respectively. Pelzel also tallied seven digs and two aces. Kate Dangel led the defensive effort with 15 digs.

In the Robert Morris-Springfield victory, Morgan Williams led the offensive effort with 10 kills. Pelzel recorded 17 assists and eight digs, with Dangel providing eight digs and a team-high four service aces.

The Engineers host the Rose-Hulman Invitational at Hulbert Arena on Friday night and Saturday. Matchups include Rose-Hulman hosting Wilmington and Eureka on Friday, then battling DePauw and Principia on Saturday.

Winning for the visitors at No. 4 singles and No. 1 doubles was Terre Haute South graduate Maddy Bogle.

• Kalamazoo 2, Rose-Hulman 0 — At Albion, Mich., the Rose-Hulman women lost despite a strong defensive effort Sunday. Julie Brennan had six saves for Rose-Hulman, now 0-3. The Engineers have a 5 p.m. home match Tuesday against Principia.

Racing

n Hines posts win — At Sun Prairie, Wis., Tracy Hines won the feature for U.S. Auto Club midgets Saturday at Angell Park Speedway.

Hines led the last three laps of the 50-lap main to win with Jerry Coons Jr. second. Brad Kuhn led the first 47 laps and took eighth.

David Budres flipped in the feature and was taken to a local hospital for observation.

• Moy gets win — John Moy was a first-time winner Saturday in racing at Crossroads Dragway.

Moy won in super pro while Justin Lourash won for the first time in pro class. Jeff Lathrop got his fourth win in sportsman class.

Fun Night runs are slated Friday with regular racing along with a King of Track race on Saturday; time runs are 11:30 a.m. and eliminations at 2:30 p.m.

Next Sunday’s schedule includes a Drag & Shine event with a car show and drag racing with eight classes, car show judging with awards, seven special awards and silent auction. Admission is free.

Class winners are Tony Virgilio in super pro, Mike Tewell in pro and Chad Eaton in sportsman class and will participate in ET finals.
