Pomeroys cruise at USCAA national tourney

UNIONTOWN, PA. — St. Mary-of-the-Woods put together two big runs in the first half Thursday and rolled to an easy 51-26 win over Southern Maine in the Pomeroys’ second game of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association women’s basketball tournament.

The Woods scored 11 straight points to turn a 9-8 lead into a 20-8 margin, then shortly after that went on a 15-2 tear to open a 37-15 advantage. The Pomeroys held Southern Maine to 28-percent shooting from the field.

Rebecca Tracy had 14 points and Brittney Shaner 12 for the Woods, which plays St. Joseph (N.Y.) at noon today in the ninth-place game.

• Fougerousse, Sycamore recruit named — Linton’s Stephanie Fougerousse and Indiana State recruit Anna Munn of Decatur Central have been named to the top 100 senior girls list by Hoosier Basketball Magazine.

The list will be narrowed to 60 for the Top 60 Workout on March 14 at Marian College.

Also on the top 100 list are Sam Cooper and Kaitlin Sweatman of Owen Valley and Elyse Weddle of Bloomfield.

Baseball

• Engineers defeated — At Winter Haven, Fla., Augustana withstood a rally by Rose-Hulman to hand the Engineers their first loss of the season by a 12-9 margin on Thursday.

Augustana led 7-0 in the fifth inning before Rose-Hulman scored seven times with two outs in the frame to knot the score at 7-7.

Chandler Kent opened the rally with a single and Chris Stemple followed with a double. Tim Tepe drove home Kent and Stemple with a single.

Keenan Long slapped a single before an error loaded the bases. Kirk Thompson and Troy Eveslage followed with back-to-back singles to make the score 7-4. Kreigh Williams brought home Thompson and Michael Kovacs with a single to make the score 7-6 before Andrew Bilse tied the score with a single.

Augustana pushed home one run in the sixth and two in the seventh to take a 10-7 lead before an RBI double by Thompson and a run-scoring single by Eveslage made the score 10-9. The Vikings added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth.

Thompson had three hits, including a double, with two runs scored and two RBIs to lead the offense. Stemple added a pair of doubles and Eveslage finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and one run scored.

• Rea opens — Head professional Dave Kennedy has announced that Rea Park will open today for the 2010 season.



• No. 10 — At Destin, Fla., former Terre Haute men’s city champion Jim Winning got the 10th hole-in-one of his career on the 170-yard 17th hole at Kelley Plantation recently.

Witnesses were Mike Fisher, Tim Feiler and Jerry Sears.

Softball

• Rose 1-1 — At Clermont, Fla., Rose-Hulman lost 4-2 to Alma but defeated Thiel 9-1 on Thursday.

Now 3-3, the Engineers play Marywood and Ohio Northern today.
