METRO ROUNDUP: HCAC tourney at Rose

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman will serve as host for the 2012 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball tournament, featuring four familiar in-state rivals.

For the third consecutive year, the four teams in the HCAC baseball tournament will be Anderson, Franklin, Manchester and Rose. The Engineers won the 2009 tournament at Franklin and the 2010 event at Anderson before Franklin claimed the 2011 championship at Manchester.

Admission to the tournament will be available for $5 per day for adults, with students from HCAC institutions admitted free.

Game 1 — No. 3 Anderson vs. No. 2 Franklin, 3 p.m.

Game 2 — No. 4 Manchester at No. 1 Rose-Hulman, 7 p.m.

Friday

Game 3 — Game 1 winner vs. Game 2 winner, noon

Game 4 — Game 1 loser vs. Game 2 loser, 3:30 p.m.

Game 5 — Game 3 loser vs. Game 4 winner, 7 p.m.

Saturday

Game 6 — Game 3 winner vs. Game 5 winner, noon

Game 7 — 30-45 minutes after Game 6 (if needed)



In other baseball news:

• Jr. Rex win — At Noblesville. The Jr. Rex went 4-0 this past weekend in winning The Trinity Shootout.

On Saturday, The Jr Rex defeated The Fishers Tigers 5-4. Trailing 4-2 entering the seventh, Reid Brown walked and Dalton Hendrix singled, then with two outs Chris Latta tied it with a two-run triple and scored on Grant Dennany’s walk-off single. Mitchell Howald picked up the victory, pitching four innings of shutout relief.

The Jr. Rex then defeated The South Central Bombers 5-3, scoring four runs in the seventh. Kavan Crowell delivered a two-run double and Jase Glassburn the game-winning double, while Nathan Higbie recorded the win in relief.

On Sunday, they defeated The Franklin Grizzlies 8-0 on a combined one-hitter by Latta, Wiley Clinkenbeard and Brown. Howald and Clinkenbeard had two hits each and Levi Dowden a two-run double.

In the championship game, The Jr. Rex defeated Fishers 14-7. Higbie’s bases-clearing double in a four-run third broke open a close game. All 10 players had at least one hit, with Latta and Glassburn getting two apiece.

The Jr. Rex (9-1) play this weekend in the 16-team Nitro Tourney at Mid West in Indianapolis.



• Seniors compete — The following results have been reported from Terre Haute Men’s Senior League play.

Highlights — For the Wabash Valley Animal Hospital Astros, Dave Montgomery had a double and RBI; Chad O’Neal a hit and 2 RBIs; Steve Atwood a hit and an RBI; and Frank Zwerner, Darren Brucken and Matt Jacobson had hits. For the Cardinals, Mrdja and Cramer had 2 hits each and Swaner had a double.



Softball

• Terror wins — The Indiana Terror 12U took first place in the May Mayhem tourney this past weekend. The girls went undefeated in pool and bracket play. So far this spring, the team owns a 20-3-1 record.

Team batting average is .476. Its next tourney will be May 18-20 at Shelbyville.
