FROM TERRE HAUTE TO THE MAJOR LEAGUES: Thatcher having a good 0-for-May

TERRE HAUTE — San Diego Padres’ left-handed relief pitcher Joe Thatcher has yet to allow a run to score in the month of May.

In eight relief appearances, the former Indiana State pitcher has held opponents scoreless in a span covering 71⁄3 innings. Thatcher has lowered is earned run average to just 2.03, with 14 strikeouts in 131⁄3 innings.

While Thatcher is thriving, the opposite was true for former ISU pitcher Matt Zaleski, resulting in his demotion from AAA to AA (see transactions below) on Thursday.

In two starts for Charlotte (May 14 and May 20), Zaleski pitched a combined nine innings, allowing 13 runs (12 earned), 15 hits, with five walks and seven strikeouts. He also issued four home runs, three vs. Durham on May 20.

Notes — Nick Ciolli has hit safely in six of his last seven games for Winston-Salem …  Jake Eigsti has hit safely in his last five games and 12 of his last 13 games for Camden, … Derek Eitel won his fourth game for Mobile on Thursday, allowing just two runs in six innings vs. Tennessee. … Mitch Stetter picked up his second and third holds of the season on Wednesday and Thursday for Huntsville, both times vs. Birmingham.

Transactions — Ryan Strausborger was placed on the 7-day disabled list (strained right groin) by Frisco … Matt Zaleski was reassigned from Charlotte (AAA) to Birmingham (AA) on Thursday.

n Clint Barmes — Barmes was 7 for 30 with one RBI in his last 10 games for Pittsburgh. He was 5 for 11 in his last four games, raising his batting average from .153 to .178.

n Nevin Ashley — Ashley is on the 7-day DL (broken hand) for Durham.

n Josh Phegley — Phegley was 8 for 39 with four doubles, three RBI in his last 10 games for Charlotte.

n Ryan Strausborger — Strausborger was 9 for 37 with three doubles, four RBI in his last 10 games for Frisco. He has not played since May 20.

n Nick Ciolli — Ciolli was 8 for 34 with four doubles, two RBI in his last 10 games for Winston-Salem.

n Brady Shoemaker — Shoemaker was 9 for 36 with two doubles, three RBI in his last 10 games for Winston-Salem.

n Kyle Lafrenz — Lafrenz is on the 7-day DL (no injury listed) for Clearwater.

n Jake Eigsti — Eigsti was 14 for 37 (.378) with six doubles, one home run and eight RBI in his last 10 games for Camden. In the past two weeks, he’s raised his batting average from .269 to .333.

n Joe Thatcher— Thatcher made five relief appearances for San Diego. In a combined 52⁄3 innings, he allowed no runs, three hits, with two walks, six strikeouts.

n Brian Omogrosso — Omogrosso made two relief appearances for Charlotte. In a combined 32⁄3 innings, he allowed two runs, four hits, with no walks, six strikeouts. He picked up his second blown save on May 13 vs. Buffalo.

n Matt Zaleski — Zaleski has allowed seven home runs in 34 2-3 innings this season, four in his last nine innings with Charlotte.

n Mitch Stetter — Stetter made five relief appearances for Huntsville. In a combined 41⁄3 innings, he allowed one run, two hits, with no walks, three strikeouts.

n Derek Eitel — Eitel made three starts for Mobile, resulting in a no decision (vs. Chattanooga on May 13), a loss (at Jacksonville on May 18) and a win (vs. Tennessee on May 24). In a combined 17 1-3 innings, he allowed 15 runs (14 earned), 20 hits, with eight walks, 11 strikeouts.

n Ryan Tatusko — Tatusko had one start and one relief appearance for Harrisburg. In a combined 51⁄3 innings, he allowed eight runs, nine hits, with two walks, one strikeouts. He allowed a home run in each outing.

n Jake Petricka — Petricka made two starts for Winston-Salem. On May 13, he was the winning pitcher, going six innings, allowing three runs (two earned), six hits, with one walk, five strikeouts. On May 18, he had a no decision, going six innings, allowing one run, three hits, with four walks, six strikeouts. Both games were against Lynchburg.

n Colin Rea — Rea made two starts for Fort Wayne. In a combined nine innings, he allowed four runs (three earned), seven hits, with four walks, six strikeouts. Both starts were no decisions.

n Jason Van Skike, Blake Drake, Brett Merkley — All three pitchers are listed as active in their respective organizations and have not been assigned to teams as of yet this season.
