PREP ROUNDUP: North girls X-C beats two ranked teams

TERRE HAUTE — Despite being one runner short, Terre Haute North beat two top-20 teams while posting a second-place finish to the host team Saturday in the Carmel Classic girls high school cross country meet.

Chanli Mundy placed fourth overall to lead the Patriots, who finished ahead of Pike and Chesterton in the four-way varsity meet.

Laura Johnson was ninth for North, which hosts the State Preview Meet next Saturday at LaVern Gibson Championship Course.

• South boys, girls win — At Avon, Terre Haute South’s boys and girls won the Avon Invitational.

South’s Taylor Head won the boys race (16:31), while Logan Hambrock was second (17:03). Other top finishers for the Braves were Matt Collier (17:24), Kyle Mullins (17:46) and Dale Young (17:55).

South’s girls were paced by freshman Nikki Thiede with a winning time of 19:52, setting a course and freshman record. Other top finishers for South were Rachel Stephens (fourth, 22:09), Katie Schimdt (fifth, 22:10), Sam Holmes (eighth, 22:47) and Nicole Howe (ninth, 23:01).

Next up for the Braves is a tri-meet Tuesday at Northview.



• Knights compete — In the Rushville Invite, Northview’s boys placed 11th out of 13 teams and its girls placed 10th out of 12.

• Braves claim title — At Indianapolis North Central, Terre Haute South — tied for eighth in the latest state poll — won the Buckley Division team title in the John Shirley Invitational for the first time ever.

Austin Foster (No. 2 singles), Torey Fox (No. 3 singles) and the Travis Rubey-Chris Telezyn duo (No. 2 doubles) each went 3-0 to win championships and help the Braves.

Among the teams Terre Haute South outpointed in the Buckley Division were No. 6-ranked Bloomington South, No. 15 Homestead, No. 17 Jasper and No. 26 Floyd Central.

Coach Bill Blankenbaker described winning this championship as “another great day for South tennis.”
