PREP ROUNDUP: Panthers cruise in sectional opener

MECCA — Sarah Burnham pitched a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in high school softball Monday evening as host Riverton Parke defeated defending champion Rockville 10-0 in opening-round action at the Class A Riverton Parke Sectional.

Burnham also had a double and Shelby Virostko, E.B. Dickey and Paige Yando had two hits each for the Panthers, who return to action at 5:15 p.m. today against Covington. The Trojans advanced by beating Attica 13-2 in the first of two five-inning games Monday.

Highlights — For Riverton Parke, E.B. Dickey was 2 for 2 with a run and 2 RBIs; Shelby Virostko was 2 for 3 with a double, a run and an RBI; Paige Yando was 2 for 4 with 2 runs and an RBI; and winning pitcher Sarah Burnham pitched a 2-hitter with 10 strikeouts and had a double, scored twice and had 2 RBIs. For Rockville, Emma Riffe and Taylor Vukovits had hits.

Next — Riverton Parke (19-7) plays Covington at 5:15 p.m. today, followed by North Vermillion against Turkey Run.



In other high school softball sectionals:

• South Vermillion 4, Brown County 2 — At Ellettsville, Cox had four hits and Daphne Dunegan pitched a complete game as the Wildcats upset the Western Indiana Conference co-champions at the Class 3A Edgewood Sectional.

Next — South Vermillion plays the winner of Monday night’s Greencastle-Owen Valley game at 5 p.m. today.



• Linton 13, North Knox 6 — At Sullivan, the Miners got off to a good start at the Class 2A Sullivan Sectional on Monday night.

Linton plays Bloomfield in a 5 p.m. semifinal game on Wednesday. Today’s games are Eastern Greene vs. Sullivan at 5 p.m., followed by North Knox against North Central.



Baseball

• Terre Haute South 4, Bloomington South 2 — At Terre Haute South, Spencer Whitlock’s double was the big blow in a three-run sixth inning as the host Braves came from behind to win their final regular-season game.

• Sullivan 4, North Central 2 — At Sullivan, the Golden Arrows made the most of just two hits and took advantage of five Thunderbird errors in the final regular-season game for both teams.

Highlights — For Sullivan, James Lisman was 1 for 1 with a double and an RBI, Noble Harrison was 1 for 3, Cameron McNeely scored 2 runs and Bryce Bement pitched a complete game. For North Central, Cole Johnson was 2 for 3 with an RBI, Collin Harding was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles, Zach Lyday was 2 for 4 and Daniel Loveall hit a solo homer.

Next — North Central (18-5) plays Bloomfield in Thursday’s second game at the Class 2A Linton Sectional. Sullivan (16-11) meets the winner of Wednesday’s South Knox-Linton game in the same tournament at 11 a.m. next Monday.



Golf

• Jasper wins — Tenth-ranked Jasper shot 306 to win the Washington Invitational played Saturday at Country Oaks.

Linton took fourth in the 15-team field with 325. Clayton French paced the Miners with 76.

Larry Knight led Northview with 79.
