TERRE HAUTE — Woodrow Wilson and Honey Creek each picked up a pair of middle school girls basketball victories Monday evening as the Vigo County tournaments for sixth- and seventh-grade teams began.
At Honey Creek, the host Bees defeated West Vigo twice, 33-12 in the sixth-grade game and 33-18 in the seventh-grade contest.
At Chauncey Rose, Woodrow Wilson took a pair of wins over Sarah Scott, 29-8 in sixth-grade play and 43-15 in the seventh-grade game.
Riley Davis scored 14 points and Lauren Hambrock 10 for the Honey Creek sixth-graders, while Brooke Houser had seven points for West Vigo.
Woodrow Wilson’s sixth-grade team was led by Lauren Perrelle with 10 points; Ty’Raja Brown scored six for the Scotties.
In seventh-grade play, Lindley Higham had 16 points in the Honey Creek victory, with Baylee Waters scoring seven for West Vigo.
A pair of 10-point scorers were the leaders in seventh-grade games at Chauncey Rose, Lauren Rowley for the winning Warriors and Sierra Young for Sarah Scott.
Doubleheaders tonight begin at 5 p.m. at both gyms. Honey Creek’s teams host Otter Creek, while Chauncey Rose will face the two winning teams from Woodrow Wilson.
Championship play begins at 6 p.m. Thursday at Terre Haute South High School.

• Craft goes out in style — At Rochester, N.Y., sophomore Megan Craft of Terre Haute South finished her Vincennes University career with 20 points as the Trailblazers lost 83-69 to Monroe in the NJCAA district championship game Sunday.
Craft hit 2 of her 3 3-point attempts and was 8 for 8 at the foul line.
Track, cross country
• Rose jumper in national finals — Rose-Hulman freshman Liz Evans will compete at 4 p.m. Friday in the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships at DePauw, according to the official entry list released on Monday.
Evans is tied for second nationally with a season best jump of 5-feet-8 at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational earlier this season. She has also cleared more than 5-7 in two other meets this winter.
She is the first female in Rose-Hulman history to qualify for the NCAA Division III Track and Field National Championships.
• Sycamores honored academically — Indiana State’s men’s and women’s cross country teams received All-Academic Team honors for the 2009 season, it was announced Monday by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
“It is obvious that this team is made up of not only quality athletes but also athletes who excel in the classroom,” said men’s coach John McNichols. “The team was led by Scott Keeney who is about as close to a 4.0 as you can get and has his choice of medical schools that he can attend.”
The men’s team ranks 19th in the nation with a 3.44 grade-point average, second-best in the Missouri Valley Conference to Southern Illinois (3.54).
The women’s team ranks 21st in the nation with a 3.58 GPA which is also the fourth-best in the MVC.
“It has been a pleasure to coach such intelligent young women,” women’s coach John Gartland said. “This was a great team to coach because of their work ethic in training and during the meets which was also reflected with their efforts in the classroom. I am very proud of them.”
The 2009 women’s team included Kayla Alexander (Terre Haute North), Julia Costello (South Vermillion), Sarah Heaton, Katelyn Isbell, Kacie Klem, Allison Malone, Carol Mass, Hanna Mercer, Erica Moore (Sullivan), Andrea Prusz, Emily Pugh (Northview), Bethany Scruton, Kelsie Slater, Kate Tarr, Kylee Thacker (Northview), Kristy Twitchell (Terre Haute South) and Adriane Wunderlich (Terre Haute South).
The 2009 men’s team included Dustin Betz, Thomas Crum, Michael Disher, Albaro Escalera, Scott Keeney, Tyler Kent, Andrew Lepkowski, Craig Padgett, Eric Schulz, Kyle Smiley, Derek Stinefield and Jeremiah Vaughan.
Softball
• Sycamore streak continues — At Orlando, Fla., Indiana State extended its winning streak to seven games on Sunday, posting victories at the Rebel Games over Youngstown State 5-3 and Sacred Heart 1-0.
Meagan McCurdy picked up both pitching victories, striking out eight in a five-hit shutout in the second game.
Starting pitcher Lindsey Beisser had a three-run double in the first game, while Casey graduate MacKenzie Connelly drove in the only run in the nightcap.
ISU played Detroit Mercy and Fairfield on Monday.
Baseball
• Engineers sweep conference awards — Rose-Hulman swept the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference weekly awards, with Chris Stemple capturing HCAC Hitter of the Week honors and Marshall’s Derek Eitel honored as the league Pitcher of the Week.
Stemple had a .594 on-base average and an .893 slugging average as the Engineers finished 5-1 in Florida last week. He finished 16 for 28 at the plate with 12 runs scored, six doubles, a grand slam against Johnson & Wales, and 10 runs batted in.
Eitel compiled a 2-0 record with a 1.69 earned run average. He pitched 16 innings and allowed just nine hits and four walks with 19 strikeouts in two starts.
The 19th-ranked Rose-Hulman team opens its home season at 7 p.m. Friday against Calvin College.
Wrestling
• Garner eighth — At Indianapolis, Terre Haute South Middle School team member Shamar Garner placed eighth in novice 95 during the weekend at the state youth folkstyle competition.
