Metro Roundup: Woods plays opener at USCAA tourney today

TERRE HAUTE — The St. Mary-of-the-Woods women’s basketball team will open play at 2 p.m. today vs. Penn State-Brandywine in the USCAA National Basketball Championship Tournament which runs until Saturday in Uniontown, Pa.

SMWC (14-12) is a No. 7-seed and enters the tournament on a high note, closing the regular season with seven consecutive wins. SMWC last participated in this tournament in 2002.

“The team is very excited about playing in the national tournament. Since day one of preseason back in September, we have talked about how hard we had to work to put ourselves in a situation to get to the tournament,” said SMWC coach Deanna Bradley.

In other basketball:

• HCAC honors four Rose players — Four members of the Rose-Hulman men’s basketball team were named honorable mention by the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Senior Jeff McCartney, sophomore Jason Haslag, sophomore Blake Knotts and freshman Austin Weatherford claimed honors for their efforts this season.

Baseball

• Rose baseball prevails — At Auburndale, Fla., Rose-Hulman defeated Hiram 17-0 and improved to 3-0 on the season. Jim Bob Schuler earned the victory for the Engineers in his first collegiate start.

Softball

• Rose softball earns shutout — At Clermont, Fla., the Engineers won their first game of the season, defeating Lebanon Valley 8-0. Rose-Hulman is 1-2 for the season.
