DES MOINES, IOWA —
Just 0.07 of a second separated Indiana State sophomore Greggmar Swift from a spot in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles as the Sycamore placed 10th in the semifinals Thursday at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
“I swear I looked across and it seemed like we all finished together,” Swift said. “It was the closest race I have had all season.”
The sophomore ran in the opening heat of the semifinals and finished fourth with a time of 13.60 seconds. Shane Brathwaite of Texas Tech, like Swift, a native of Barbados, won the heat in 13.52. Jarrett Easton of Syracuse was the other automatic qualifier in 13.55 with Miami senior Devon Hill third in 13.58. The top two in each heat automatically advanced with the two fastest non-automatic qualifiers also advancing.
“It was [Swift’s] fastest semifinal race of the season,” coach John McNichols said. “It is just amazing how fast everyone is running out here.”
“This race was so close,” said Swift, who ran 13.49 at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships. “I really cannot complain about the finish. I had a brilliant start and I think we were side-by-side the entire race. I am going to take what I learned from this race and apply it to my next race. It might be just as close as this one.”
Swift will be returning to Barbados to compete for a spot on its Olympic team. He competed for Barbados at the World University Games last summer.
Indiana State’s competition at the finals continues today with three throwers competing. Brandon Pound competes in the men’s hammer at 3 p.m. with Felisha Johnson and Mary Theisen going in the women’s shot put at 6. Johnson was 22nd in women’s discus on Wednesday, when Stacia Weatherford was 19th in women’s 400-meter hurdles.
Baseball
• Five Sycamores earned academic honors — Five Indiana State players earned all-Missouri Valley Conference academic honors Thursday, with Jon Hedges, Koby Kraemer and Jeremy Lucas making the first team.
Kyle Burnam and Reggie Hochstedler earned honorable-mention status.
Hedges, an honorable-mention all-conference pick after hitting .305 with seven homers and 43 RBIs, has a 3.63 grade-point average in criminology.
Kraemer, with a 3.94 GPA in physical education and exercise science, batted .262, led the team with 12 sacrifices and had just two errors while starting 57 games.
Lucas, a recent major-league draftee by the Cleveland Indians, was the Joe Carter MVC Player of the Year after hitting .345 with nine homers, 52 RBIs and 53 runs. He has a 3.54 GPA in recreation and sports management.
Burnam, a second-team all-MVC pick, batted .321 and finished fourth in career walks at ISU. He has a 3.49 GPA in recreation and sports management.
Hochstedler had 56 relief appearances in two seasons with the Sycamores, finishing his senior year with a 4-2 record. He has a 3.52 GPA in physical education and exercise science.

• Knights give awards — Noble Knight awards, presented to one Northview athlete in every sport who contributes with service, dedication, commitment and leadership, went to T.J. Decker in baseball, Larry Knight in boys golf, Whitney Halfhill in softball, Jenna Smith in girls tennis, Nic Yocom in boys track and Natasha Barrett in girls track as the school’s spring sports athletes were honored this week.

• Granda wins — At Brownstown, Andrew Granda of Terre Haute won the boys 10-11 age group Wednesday at a Pepsi/Aquafina junior tour event at Hickory Hills Golf Course.
Granda shot an 81, two shots better than Clay Stirsman of Carmel.
Soccer
• Flyers finish spring season — The Terre Haute Flyers finished their spring season with a 12-4-1 record, including a 4-3-1 league record, a second-place finish at the Midwest Soccer Classic and the championship of the SWISA Classic in Evansville.
