BRAZIL —
Monday was a good day for Northview in high school baseball.
By defeating West Vigo 7-3 on their home field, the Knights:
• improved to 14-3 for the season and to 4-0 in the Western Indiana Conference, clinching no less than a share of the conference championship;
• concluded Big Four Classic play with a 3-0 championship record;
• won their seventh game in a row in sunny, dry conditions; and
• defeated West Vigo for the first time since Scott McDonald has been the coach.
Individually, senior Brock Wheeler recorded his sixth save of the season to break the old record held by his coach.
“That’s great. He was able to do it in front of our fans and this team will be part of something unique,” said McDonald.
Wheeler came on in relief of winning pitcher Craig Peters with two outs in the top of the sixth and two West Vigo runners on base.
He got a strikeout to end the West Vigo rally in the sixth and retired three of the four batters he faced in the final frame to preserve the victory and 7-3 lead.
Northview took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Peters doubled and scored on Connor Pierce’s single.
West Vigo took a 2-1 lead in the second when Cody Thornton reached on a muffed third strike, took third on an error and scored on a single by Davie Inman, who scored on a double by junior pitcher Brandon Calleja.
The Knights came back with four runs in the bottom of the second. T.J. Decker led off with a double and Kodie Girton and Peters also both had doubles in the inning as the host team took a 5-2 lead.
West Vigo tallied its final run in the fifth when Calleja walked and scored on Thornton’s single, but the rally ended when Northview turned its second double play of the contest.
Peters and Decker each had three hits for the Knights and both rapped a pair of doubles. Girton had a double and single and drove in two runs.
Inman was 3 for 3 for the Vikings and Thornton was 2 for 4.
Peters improved to 3-1 and said his curveball was his best pitch.
“It was a great win. We got great pitching, hit the ball well and had defense. Craig had the mentality to win without his best stuff,” said McDonald.
The Knights will be at South Vermillion today for another WIC game and will conclude conference action Friday against Owen Valley.
