Vikings get 18th win over Shakamak

TERRE HAUTE — West Vigo began a busy week of high school baseball Monday  on a winning note, defeating Shakamak 6-3.

The Vikings improved to 18-9 and will conclude the regular season with another home game against Riverton Parke this evening. They will face South Vermillion in Greencastle Class 3A Sectional play on Wednesday and will play again Thursday if successful in the tournament opener.

West Vigo coach Steve DeGroote was pleased with the way the week began. “This was a good win . . . a total team effort with great senior leadership,” he said.

Shakamak took a 1-0 lead on Brett Yeryar’s fourth homer of the season in the fourth frame but West Vigo came back to go up 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

Kyle Stewart walked to start the rally and Cody Thornton followed with his fourth homer to put the host team up 2-1. Stewart then walked and scored on a muffed third strike.

Shakamak scored twice in the fifth, making the most of two walks, one error and a two-out double by Luke Sweet. Lucas Fagg relieved starter Travis Lewzader to get the final out with two runners on base.

The Vikings completed the scoring in the sixth when Kaleb Blair began the inning by reaching on another muffed third strike and scored on a hit by Thornton to put the Vikings ahead again. Kyle Stewart singled and scored on a passed ball and Thornton closed out the scoring on a hit by Davie Inman.

Fagg retired the Lakers in order in the sixth and gave up a single while striking out the side in the seventh to get the win -- his first of the season while Patrick Green suffered his first loss of the season.

“The little plays cost us the game but we didn’t hit the ball as well as I would have liked,” said Shakamak coach Chip Sweet.

The Lakers are ranked second in the weekly Class A poll and will take a 22-6 record into the Class A sectional played on its home field and will not play until next Monday in the semifinal round.

“I don’t know if that is good or bad,” said the coach, noting 28 games is the most his team has played in some time.
