Metro Roundup: Rose, Woods play tonight at Hulbert Arena

Rose-Hulman hosts St. Mary of the Woods College in the 17th Clabber Girl Trophy women’s basketball game at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Hulbert Arena.

Rose-Hulman has won five straight meetings in the series, including a 70-58 decision last season. St. Mary-of-the-Woods continues to hold an 11-5 series lead after winning 11 consecutive games in the series from 1995-2003.

Rose-Hulman junior Donna Marsh leads the Engineer attack with averages of 12.6 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. Marsh is also ranked 12th nationally with 2.95 blocked shots per game. Sophomore Alisa Dickerson provides depth with 10.7 points per game.

Freshman Brittney Shaner averages 17.8 points per game and leads a St. Mary-of-the-Woods attack that features a 3-3 record against NCAA Division III competition so far this season. Chelsey Barron is also averaging double figures at 11.7 points per game and leads the Pomeroys in assists and steals.

The Clabber Girl Trophy, created by Hulman and Company in 1995, has been awarded to the winner of each matchup between Rose-Hulman and St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

The game will be broadcast on WMHD-FM 90.7 on Wednesday night. Tickets to the game will be available at the door beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Baseball

• ISU picked sixth in MVC preseason poll — The Indiana State baseball team was picked sixth in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll.

The Sycamores, who will be led by first-year coach Rick Heller, received 29 votes. ISU was picked ahead of Evansville and Bradley.

Wichita State was tabbed to win the league as the Shockers received seven out of eight first-place votes. Missouri State was picked second and Creighton, the only other team to get a first-place vote, was tabbed third. Illinois State and Southern Illinois were fourth and fifth.

ISU outfielder Ryan Strausborger was selected to the All-MVC preseason team. Strausborger hit .340 last season with 6 home runs and 26 RBIs.

ISU opens its season on Feb. 19 at Shreveport, La. when the Sycamores play Texas Southern. ISU’s home opener in the newly-remodeled Bob Warn Field is March 2 against Indiana.
