Woods soccer goes 1-1, earns national honors

TERRE HAUTE — St. Mary-of-the-Woods returned from the United States Collegiate Athletic Association soccer finals with a 1-1 record and a host of national honors.

The Pomeroys, who lost 4-1 to top-seeded Maine Fort Kent in their opener on Friday and defeated New Hampshire Technical Institute by the same score on Saturday, received an All-America honor, five academic All-America honors, an all-tourney selection and an honorable-mention All-America honor from the USCAA.

Terre Haute North graduate Erin Pugh was named to the USCAA All-America team for the second time and also received academic honors. Goalkeeper April Baranowski was the honorable-mention All-America player and another academic honoree, and Britt Simmerman made the all-tournament team and received academic honors. Also winning academic All-America awards were Maureen Brown and Emily Contreraz.

The eighth seed in the tournament, SMWC played well before falling to the top-ranked team in its opener. “Your Pomeroys showed themselves as lionesses today,” coach Mike Aycock said after that match, “but could not quite pull off another stunning upset in the first round of the tournament.”

In their consolation match, against a team they defeated in overtime in the national tournament a year earlier, the Pomeroys were in control.

Simmerman assisted Sam Morrison for the first goal in the third minute and also assisted on a score by Logan Jones and Pugh added the third score as SMWC outshot its opponents 17-2 in the first period. Pugh added the Pomeroys’ only second-period goal helped by a long goal kick by Baranowski. Reserves saw plenty of action.
