HAMMOND, La. —
The Indiana State baseball team opened its 2012 season Friday afternoon, falling 7-2 on the road to the Southeastern Louisiana Lions at Alumni Field.
Southeastern Louisiana jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring in the first inning after loading the bases with no outs.
Indiana State got its first hit of the season in the third when senior Jon Hedges led off with a single. Freshman Landon Curry picked up his first collegiate hit when he came up next, doubling down the left-field line and moving Hedges to third. Three batters later, sophomore Tyler Wampler got ISU on the board with a groundout that brought home Hedges.
The Sycamores tied the score at 2-2 in the fifth, using a two-out RBI double by senior Lucas Hileman to plate Wampler from second base.
The Lions regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when Harry Slade grounded out to give SELU a 3-2 advantage.
The score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the eighth when Southeastern put the game away with four runs. With the bases loaded, Jacob Fisher hit a one-out, bases-clearing double to put the Lions in front 7-2.
Curry led the Sycamores with a pair of hits Friday, also scoring one run.
Junior Dakota Bacus (0-1) started on the mound for ISU, tossing seven innings while allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore Kurt Kudrecki, senior Chris Machado and sophomore Josh Negele all saw relief time in the eighth inning.
ISU and SELU will square off again at 7 p.m. today, due to the expectation of rain in the morning and afternoon.

n Pounds breaks record — At Charleston, Ill., junior Brandon Pounds broke a seven-year-old Indiana State record in the men’s weight throw and automatically qualified for the 2012 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships as he won the event at the EIU Friday Night Special in Lantz Gymnasium.
Pounds won with a personal-best distance of 70 feet, 8.5 inches, which broke the previous record of 69-7.5 established by Jason Carruthers in 2005. The distance also surpassed the automatic qualifying mark of 70-6, which guarantees him a spot in the 2012 NCAA indoor championships. Pounds moved up to seventh in the nation and second in the Valley with the winning effort.
ISU’s Felisha Johnson, who had already qualified for the 2012 NCAA indoors, also was a winner Friday as she took the women’s shot put with a distance of 69-10.25. Johnson had a throw of 71-1.25 in December to automatically qualify for the NCAA.
Indiana State sophomore Greggmar Swift continued his hot streak by winning the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.39 seconds in the finals. That is fifth best in school history.
All three of the ISU hurdlers advanced to the meet finals. Sophomore Duane Brown finished second in 7.53, which ties him for 11th best all-time at Indiana State. Sophomore Maurice Lyke was the fourth Division I athlete and fifth overall with a time of 7.66.
Indiana State freshman Carmelia Stewart finished as the top Division I athlete and third overall in the women’s 55 hurdles with a time of 8.20 seconds. The freshman just missed the school record of 8.18 seconds set by Dierdra Woodley in 1996 but still has the second-best time in school history.
All four of the Sycamore women hurdlers advanced to the meet finals. Senior Sarah Snapp ran 8.48 to finish eighth overall, with freshman Taylor Gilles 10th in 8.57 and sophomore Brittany Housel 13th in 8.83. Gilles ran the ninth-fastest 55 hurdle time in the preliminaries as she finished in 8.35.
The meet was still going on late Friday night.
