Rex drop from first

RICHMOND — Two disastrous innings from a tired bullpen helped knock the Terre Haute Rex out of first place in the Prospect League West Division baseball standings Friday night.

Host Richmond scored four times in the seventh and twice more in the eighth for a 9-6 win over the Rex — who once led 6-1 — on Friday, dropping the Rex to 12-8 for the second half. First-half champion Quincy defeated Dubois County 3-1 on Friday, the Gems’ third win in two days, and passed the Rex with a record that’s currently 14-8.

Richmond scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning on two hits and a Rex error, but Terre Haute tied the score in the top of the third when Ronnie Mitchell doubled and came around on two infield outs; Joe Meggs got the RBI.

Then Terre Haute added five more runs the next inning, which started with back-to-back doubles by Koby Kraemer and Nick Johnson and also included a run-scoring triple by Mitchell and a two-run single by Meggs.

The River Rats crept back with single runs in the fourth — another Rex error contributing — and fifth, but the visitors still led 6-3 going into the bottom of the seventh.

The next two innings are ones manager Brian Dorsett will probably want to forget as soon as possible. Five different Rex pitchers combined to issue six walks and hit two batters, and Terre Haute’s third error of the game allowed the go-ahead run to score to cap the four-run seventh inning.
