Post 346 tops Sullivan 5-1

TERRE HAUTE — Wayne Newton Post 346 continued a busy week in American Legion baseball with a 5-1 victory over Sullivan Post 139 on Wednesday, defeating a future sectional opponent.

Wayne Newton will take on another sectional contender tonight as Washington visits the Terre Haute North field.

Post 346 took advantage of some control issues by Ethan Sparks in the third inning that fueled a four-run inning.

Daniel Marlow reached via the base-on-balls, advanced to second on Jimmy Maxwell’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Cody Thornton’s rip through the left side for an RBI single.

Shortstop Zach Milam followed with a single to score a hustling Thornton from second base. Tony Rosselli walked to load the bases, and Colton Rupska picked up an RBI with another walk.

Preston Tofaute delivered a two-run single with a sharp chopper up the middle of the infield.

Wayne Newton added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Sam Wolf, but Nolan Kinnett of Post 139 came on in relief throwing strikes to shut down the Wayne Newton offense.

“I would have liked to scored some more runs. I didn’t think we were as focused at the plate as we should be,” manager John Hayes said. “Sometimes they’re just not focused and going through the motions. We see this every year. We’re playing a lot more games than they do in high school. They get [mentally] tired.”

The Post 346 pitching was consistent, beginning with Bryan Nacke, who struck out four and gave up one hit in three innings. Nacke is working on his game after playing this spring for Vincennes University.

Sullivan got the leadoff man on twice against Nacke, and had consecutive singles to start the sixth inning later in the game.

“I know we had runners first and second twice with nobody out, just couldn’t get a big hit at the right time,” Sullivan manager Craig Klitz said. “Can’t take anything away from Terre Haute, they’re a good ball club.”

T.J. Decker, a recent Northview graduate, followed Nacke with three scoreless innings, striking out three and giving up three singles. Decker will get a start this weekend, hoping to impress a junior college coach.

“My stuff wasn’t working early, wasn’t throwing strikes, but I came through, finally got going. I’m ready to pitch against Princeton on Saturday,” Decker said.

Pete Lanoo of Terre Haute South tossed the final three innings, relinquishing the shutout when a Milam error helped Post 139 score a run on a groundout by Kyler Fulford.

“Those kids came in here to play us a hard ball game and they did. Sullivan played well,” Hayes said.

Damon Olds will pitch tonight’s game against Washington.
