Indiana State’s Kylie Hutson added another honor to her illustrious career at Indiana State as she was named the Indoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year by the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Wednesday. This was the second straight year that Hutson has received the award.
Hutson was also one of six members of the Indiana State women’s track & field team that received All-Academic recognition. The other five members include Kelsey Hanley, Richelle Kimble, Lauren Martin, Leeann Michl, and Erica Moore.
Hutson, Martin, and Moore were named All-Academic for the third straight year while Hanley received her second straight recognition.
Hutson is a five-time All-American and winner of four straight NCAA women’s pole vault championships. She was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine® Academic All-American Women’s Track & Field and Cross Country first team as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of American in June.
Hutson majored in Physical Education-Exercise Science at Indiana State with a 3.51 grade point average. She was one of the final 10 candidates for The Bowerman which is presented by the USTFCCCA to the top female track and field athlete in the nation but did not make the final three.
Moore is a two-time All-American who majored in Geology at Indiana State with a 3.61 GPA. Martin is a four-time All-American who majored in marketing at Indiana State with a 3.32 GPA. Hanley is majoring in safety management at Indiana State and has a 3.32 GPA. Grade point averages and majors were not available for Kimble or Michl.
“This is probably the most women that we have had to receive Academic All-American status,” said former ISU women’s coach John Gartland, who finished his career at women’s track coach during the 2010 season. “It is a great honor for them. They are all great human beings in addition to being great students and outstanding athletes. Obviously, we will lose some of them but the others will be back so our future is bright.”
Gartland will continue to coach many of the same athletes as head coach of the women’s cross country team.
Auto racing
• SUMAR Classic rescheduled at Action Track — The SUMAR Classic, which was postponed on July 21 by rain and damp conditions on the race grounds at the Terre Haute Action Track, has been rescheduled.
The USAC Silver Crown cars will now race on Saturday, Oct. 9.
Golf
• Goss, Gertz win — At West Lafayette, match play began Wednesday in the Boys state junior championships at the Purdue Kampen Course. Two Terre Haute South golfers won their first two matches.
Thomas Goss bested Thomas Cameron of Shererville 4 and 3 and Cory Gertz defeated Terek Abdalla of Greenwood 4 and 2 in the first round.
In the second round, Goss was a 4 and 3 winner over Tanner Rabb of Zionsville 4 and 3 and Gertz bested Chase Wagner of Bedford in 19 holes.
Today, Goss meets Rylan Porter, a state finalist qualifier from Monrovia, and Gertz takes on Ben-Marvin Egel of Kokomo.
Soccer
• ISU’s Erenli to play for Turkish national team — With the first exhibition match of the 2010 Indiana State women’s soccer season just 12 days away, most of the 2010 squad is preparing to gather on campus in Terre Haute in the coming days. The same cannot be said for ISU junior Seyma Erenli, who will be competing for Turkey’s women’s national team against England in a World Cup qualifier at Bank’s Football Stadium in Walsall, England today.
“It obviously means a lot to me since my parents are both Turkish and playing for the national team is a great honor,” said Erenli. “Not only do I get to play at this level, but I’m competing against the best in the world, which will only make me a better, stronger and more experienced player.”
Erenli has been training with the Turkish national team since June after Turkey’s head coach Fetih Demircan contacted her about joining the team. She was slated to make the trip with the team for their game on June 23 in Austria, but her Turkish passport was not ready in time for the match.
“I am very excited for Seyma to have the opportunity to play with the Turkish National team,” said ISU head coach Erika True. “It is a tremendous honor that she has earned for herself this summer. She has worked extremely hard all spring and summer to get herself fit and to be at the peak of her soccer career.”
Erenli will be entering her junior season when she returns to Indiana State this fall, coming off of two impressive years to begin her Sycamore career. Last season, Erenli started in all 18 games, en route to earning Honorable Mention All-MVC plaudits. Seyma scored three goals and tallied two assists from her position in the midfield.
