TERRE HAUTE —
Downtown Terre Haute Inc. is adding some real color to the city’s central business district.
DTH has organized a project to plant flowers in dozens of downtown flower boxes. Local businesses can “adopt” a flower box to help pay for the care of the plants.
“This is just the start,” said Stephanie Boyd, a member of Downtown Terre Haute Inc. and an organizer of the flower box campaign.
Businesses can adopt a small box for $50, a medium box for $150 and a large box for $250.
DTH has contracted with Precision Lawn Plus Inc., a local landscaping company, to plant and maintain the flower boxes. In all, 77 boxes are part of the program. They are located on Wabash Avenue, Ohio Street, Sixth Street, Seventh Street and other downtown locations.
Some boxes remain available for adoption, Boyd noted.
Adopting a flower box does not require any maintenance. Precision Lawn Plus will maintain the boxes, including watering the plants.
“We’re trying to make it simple,” Boyd said, adding that those adopting a box will be recognized with a decorative plaque, media coverage and various online methods.
This year the boxes are being planted with perennial flowers. Next year, DTH plans to add some annuals to the mix.
Major donors for the project include the Indiana State University Facilities Management’s Recycling Center, Duke Energy, The City of Terre Haute and Time Warner Cable Media.
Many downtown businesses have adopted flower boxes for the campaign. Their adoption fees have helped cover the projects approximate $17,000 cost, said Boyd, who is a sales assistant with Time Warner Media Sales and owner of Hallie Hound Barkery.
“The project is designed to be self-sustaining,” Boyd said. “This is a great start.”
