TERRE HAUTE —
Greg Towne of Clermont, Fla., has been named head women’s golf coach at Indiana State, Director of Athletics Ron Prettyman announced Monday.
“Greg Towne brings a wealth of teaching and playing experience to our program,” Prettyman said. “He is a Midwest native and a product of one of our Missouri Valley Conference schools. He is inheriting a quality group of young ladies that excel in the classroom and on the golf course. Coach Towne is a nice addition to the Sycamore head coaching family.”
Towne, a graduate of Wichita State, has 22 years of professional golf experience and 10 years teaching experience. He was the lead instructor at Rabito Golf from 2001-2009 and played on the European Senior Tour for the past two years. He tied for 27th at the 2009 European PGA Championship.
“Many athletic programs desire success, but few make the required effort to recruit the brightest student athletes, the most qualified coaches and have a skilled, passionate administration,” Towne said. “Ron Prettyman and his entire staff at Indiana State University are setting the bar high. As the head coach of the women’s golf program, I intend to help our student athletes set a new standard of excellence in the Missouri Valley Conference.”
Towne was a member of the Nationwide Tour for five seasons with eight top-10 finishes, including a third place at the 1992 Panama City Beach Classic. He qualified and made the cut at the 1997 U.S. Open. As an amateur, Towne was named to the 1982 Missouri Valley All-Conference team and went on to win the 1986 Kansas State Amateur Championship.
Indiana State opens the fall portion of its schedule at the Redbird Invitational on Sept. 11-12 .
Soccer
• Lahay honored — After leading Indiana State to a pair of shutouts over Butler and IPFW, goalkeeper Emily Lahay has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Lahay, a junior from Sullivan, recorded her fifth and sixth career shutouts as the Sycamores defeated Butler in Indianapolis on Friday by a score of 1-0 before topping IPFW 2-0 at Memorial Stadium on Sunday.
Lahay’s six clean sheets puts her in third place on ISU’s career list, behind Rachel Rudzis (11 in 2004-07) and Carey Patton (10 in 2001-03). She was also in goal the last time that ISU notched back-to-back shutouts, when the Sycamores defeated both Drake and Illinois State by 1-0 scores during their run to the MVC Tournament championship game in 2008.
She made five saves against the Bulldogs on Friday, including a save on a penalty kick in the opening 10 minutes of the match. On Sunday, Lahay helped direct the ISU defense to a performance that did not allow a shot on goal for the entire game.
The Sycamores will look for their third consecutive win this Sunday, 1 p.m. match against Eastern Illinois at Memorial Stadium.

Rounding out the top 10 are Michigan in seventh, Eastern Michigan eighth, Notre Dame ninth, and Kent State 10th.
