Martinsville, Ill. — Simor’s Gold was the big winner in Monday’s thoroughbred horse racing at the Martinsville Agricultural Fair in Illinois.
The bay gelding won the Martinsville Derby, the final event on the six-race card, and will try to become the first Old National Road Triple Crown winner.
Owned by David and Danielle Paul of Greenup, Simor’s Gold won the first leg of the derby at the Clark County Fair and can become the first to win all three races by winning Aug. 24 at the Cumberland County Fair.
Justin Keiser has been the jockey in both races. He has been riding at Indiana Downs and Hoosier Downs in Indiana.
Simor’s Gold held off Secret Charge, ridden by Jorge Colazzo Jr., at the finish to win the longest race of the afternoon.
Keister and Colazzo each rode three winners on the card. Each had three winners at Marshall and rode the horses involved in a dead heat.
Colazzo is one of the leading jockeys at Fairmont Park.
Keister’s other wins came on Cart’s Street Rod, going from last to first, and Busheler, both owned by Norm Bishop of Marshall.
Colazzo rode The White Pirate and Pirates On Line in the first two races. Both are owned by Stacey Holsapple of Greenup. His other win came on Mayor Michael O, owned by Linda Holsapple.
John Minks, jockey from Sullivan, Ind., was thrown by Brazen Clown in the third race when the horse slipped on a wet spot on the track. Minks was not injured.
Monday’s program was delayed 90 minutes to allow workers to get the track in shape following a heavy morning rain.
Three days of harness racing begin today. Post time is 1 p.m. CDT.
