Metro roundup: Wood shuts down Creighton as ISU softball snaps winless streak

Darcy Wood pitched a three-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts Saturday afternoon as Indiana State snapped a nine-game Missouri Valley Conference softball losing streak with a 1-0 win over Creighton.

Meredith Simpson had a hit and scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Katie Armour.

Amber Paz added a single and double and Northview graduate Stephanie Jonson also had a double for the Sycamores, now 11-19 overall and 3-10 in conference play. Indiana State has a doubleheader Wednesday at Butler. Creighton fell to 23-10 and 11-2 with the loss.



In other softball:

• Casey wins two — At Casey, Ill., Casey swept a high school doubleheader from Shakamak on Friday, winning by scores of 3-2 and 4-2.

Toni Burris was the winning pitcher in both games. Mackenzie Connelly had two hits and drove in three runs.

Casey improved to 7-2 with the sweep and met Johnston City in a doubleheader on Saturday.



• Maroons sweep Tigers — At Robinson, Ill., the host Maroons swept an Apollo Conference doubleheader over Paris by identical 4-3 scores on Saturday, needing nine innings for the second-game victory.

Auto racing

• Coons posts win — At Rossburg, Ohio, Jerry Coons Jr. won the feature race Saturday in U.S. Auto Club sprint car racing at Eldora Speedway.

Coons led the final six turns to win the 30-lap main event.

Dave Darland was fast qualifier and was second in the feature in assuming first place in the sprint point totals going into Friday's race at Gas City.

• Hoopsters win consolation bracket — At Fishers, the Terre Haute Hoopsters seventh-grade girls team won the consolation bracket Saturday at the Fishers Fieldhouse Spring Shootout.

The Hoopsters, 17-2, compete this coming weekend at the IBA semistate at Vincennes.
