Cage-fighting event rescheduled

It appears Shane Meehan of Terre Haute will get his opportunity to headline a cage-fighting event in the Zorah Shrine Temple after all.

After his July bout against Justin Wade of Fort Wayne was called off, reportedly because of an injury to a fighter on the card, no information surfaced about a rescheduled date — until Thursday.

A card consisting of 12-20 bouts, including Meehan vs. Wade, will take place inside an eight-sided cage at 7 p.m. Oct. 13. Most of the combatants will be amateurs. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

“I’m very happy about the situation,” said Meehan, who owns a 17-2 pro record. “I’m ready to get it over with.”

Meehan and the 6-foot-8, 285-pound Wade, whose record was 7-2 back in July, will be competing for the vacant North American Boxing Council (NABC) heavyweight championship in mixed martial arts. A public weigh-in for the pair is slated for 7 p.m. Oct. 12 at Terre Haute’s Pacesetter Sports.

Meehan, who had dieted down to 223 pounds in July, plans to tip the scales at about 245-255 pounds.

“I’m in good shape,” he told the Tribune-Star. “My power is a lot better than it was a few months ago.”

“He’s got a big left hook and a good right hand,” said former World Boxing Federation cruiserweight champion Terry Ray, who’s been helping Meehan train.

Meehan said in July that he would “get into him and chop him down like a tree,” referring to Wade.

His predictions this week were less graphic, but still filled with confidence.

“I’ve heard he’s very strong,” Meehan said of Wade, “but his hands aren’t as fast as mine. So I plan to jump on him fast. His groundskills are solid. But if it turns into a boxing match, there’s no way he’s going to be able to compete.”

Tickets — 10-person tables ($400) or individual general admission ($25) — can be purchased by calling Meehan at (812) 230-5301 or by going through central Indiana Ticketmaster outlets.

Names of other Terre Haute cage fighters appearing on the card will be announced next week. Tony Delk is in charge of promotions.
