Madison, Wis. — The Indiana State men’s and women’s track and field teams took third place in the Wisconsin Elite Invitational on Saturday, finishing behind Wisconsin and Purdue.
The ISU women’s team, ranked No. 22 in the nation, finished just 12 points behind Purdue with 178 points. Purdue had 190 and Wisconsin 242.
“It is tough to take third place but the girls competed hard in every event that they were in,” said ISU assistant coach Angie Martin, who was filling in for coach John Gartland. “It will be nice to be able to work on some individual stuff for the next two weeks without worrying about the team score.”
The men’s team had 152 to Purdue’s 184 and Wisconsin’s 2511/2.
Sullivan native Erica Moore won the 400-meter dash, easily with a time of 54.47 to notch an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Moore also placed second in the 60 hurdles (8.84) and fifth in the long jump (18-feet-8). Teammate Lauren Martin was fourth in the long jump (18-9 3/4). Martin was also second in the triple jump (41-7 3/4) to hit an NCAA provisional distance.
The women had two other winners Saturday, with Kelsey Hanley also hitting a NCAA provisional mark in the weight throw with a heave of 65-7.
The men’s throwers also had a strong day. Josh Williams won the weight throw with a distance of 62-11/4, while teammates Brandon Pounds (61-1 1/2) and Lyle Nolcox (59-8 1/2) were second and third.
ISU’s Jeremiagh Vaughn was close to a school-record run in the 3,000.
He came within a half-second of establishing an Indiana State record as he finished fifth in the event with a time of 8:08.78. All-American Jordan Fife holds the ISU mark at 8:08.14. Vaughan’s time was also just a second off a provisional qualifying time.
“Overall it was a pretty good meet,” men’s coach John McNichols said. “The kids ran hard. I think the key for us here was some really nice individual performances. Now we have two weeks of just performance oriented competition with no team scores kept as we prepare for the conference championships.”
Terre Haute North graduate Kylie Hutson won the pole vault with a height of 13-111/4 to hit an NCAA automatic qualifying mark.
The men’s team’s Ernest Rollins won the triple jump at 46-01/2.
In other track Saturday:
• Rose gets relay record — Rose-Hulman earned seven event victories and topped a 25-year old relay school record to highlight the seventh annual Engineer Invitational at the Sports and Recreation Center on Saturday.
The competition included 360 student-athletes from Indiana (Rose-Hulman, Marian), Illinois (Millikin, Monmouth, Principia), Kentucky (Bellarmine), Missouri (Washington University), and Ohio (Mount St. Joseph).
Rose-Hulman’s highlight of the day came in the next to last event of the afternoon, as the 1,600-meter relay squad snapped a 25-year old school record with a time of 3:23.62.
Members of the record setting relay team included freshman Brent Austgen, junior Paul Bouagnon, senior Travis Vanderberg and sophomore Sutton Coleman.
Coleman also improved his NCAA Division III provisional qualification mark in the triple jump to capture top honors. His effort marked a career best leap of 47-11/2 that ranks second in school history and is the third best mark in NCAA Division III this season.
Other winners for the Engineer men included the 800-meter relay team in a school record and meet record time of 1:31.19. Team members included freshman Josh Selig, Bouagnon, Coleman and Vanderberg. Junior Derek Bischak rounded out the event winners with a time of 1:58.23 in the 800-meter run.
On the women’s side, NCAA automatic qualifying freshman Liz Evans captured the high jump title with a provisional mark of 5-6. Freshman Creasy Clauser established another school record with a time of 2:18.59 in the 800-meter run for top honors, and senior Melissa Rogers claimed the mile run in a time of 5:12.04.
Other notable performances for the women’s squad included freshman Gloria Boxell with a school record time of 9.50 in the 55-meter high hurdles, and freshman Devon Hardman with a high jump leap of 5-21/4 for second place.
Within the team standings, the Rose-Hulman men recorded a fourth-place finish and the women placed fifth of eight squads. The Monmouth squad captured top honors in the men’s standings, and a tie occurred between Monmouth and Division II Bellarmine on the women’s side.
Rose-Hulman returns to action Saturday at the DePauw University Invitational at 11 a.m. in Greencastle.
Swimming
• Rose diver has big day — Rose-Hulman junior diver Michael Gerdov provisionally qualified for both the one-meter and three-meter diving events at the upcoming NCAA Division III Championships to lead the swimming and diving win over Franklin on Saturday.
Gerdov recorded six-dive totals of 287.55 in the one-meter event and 298.1 in the three-meters to provisionally qualify for the nationals for the second straight year. In addition, his efforts broke both Rose-Hulman and Sports and Recreation Center records.
In the swimming events, Rose-Hulman’s men combined for nine event wins to claim a 127-55 victory against the Grizzlies. The women relied on nine wins to earn the 98-63 victory.
On the men’s side, freshman Jacob Sheets claimed the 1,000-freestyle in a time of 10:36.59, and senior Brian Yount captured top honors in the 500-freestyle in a time of 5:06.39 to lead the distance events.
Intermediate event winners for Rose-Hulman included sophomore Greg Laudick with a time of 1:56.96 in the 200-freestyle; and freshman John Huster of Terre Haute North won the 200-individual medley in a time of 2:05.64.
Sprint event winners for the Engineers included senior Landry Carbo in the 100-butterfly in a time of 56.98; Huster in the 100-backstroke in a time of 54.80 seconds; and senior Clayton Shotwell in the 100-breaststroke in a time of 1:04.85.
Both swimming teams return to action next Saturday in a meet at DePauw University at 1 p.m.
