Metro Roundup: Wayne Newton dominates in sectional championship


Vincennes — Wayne Newton Post 346 flexed its power in its American Legion baseball sectional on Sunday against Vincennes Post 73. Four home runs in the first three innings were more than enough to lead Post 346 to an easy 20-2 victory.

It was the ninth consecutive sectional championship for Post 346. Wayne Newton will play in the Princeton regional starting Friday against an as yet undetermined foe.

Dougie Collett got Post 346 (25-9) started in the first inning with a three-run home run. A four-run second inning was highlighted by an A.J. Reed two-run home run. Reed got into the act again in a six-run third inning with another three-run blast. Andrew Gauer also had a three-run home run as Post 346 led 13-1.

Shawn Walker got the victory for Post 346 and improved to 5-1 on the season.

Highlights — For Post 346: Dougie Collett was 3-for-4 with a HR and 3 RBIs; Andrew Gauer was 2-for-3 with a HR and 3 RBIs; Jacob Hayes was 3-for-3 with a double, triple and 3 RBIs; A.J. Reed was 3-for-3 with two HRs and 6 RBIs; Pilipovich was 2-for-4 with a double.

• Valle 13s in finals — At Brazil, Valle Field defeated South Gibson 6-4 on Sunday to earn a berth in Tuesday night’s championship game of the 13-year-old Babe Ruth Southwest State Tournament.

Jacob Johnson had three singles and two RBI to lead Valle Field at the plate, and pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Nick Long.

Long had a double, single and an RBI, while Adam Stultz had two doubles, Ryan Moshak and Zach Milam each had a single and an RBI and Luke Schoffstall had a single.

Moshak and Milam had back-to-back RBI singles in a three-run third inning.

Long struck out six batters in his four innings of work, and Johnson had two Ks.

Valle Field must be beaten twice on Tuesday by the survivor of Monday night’s action.

• Clay 11s win Southern State — At Bloomington, Clay County’s 11-year-old Cal Ripken team defeated Batesville 8-2 and 16-1 over the weekend to win the Southern State Championship.

The team will now advance to the Ohio Valley Regional at Hammond starting on Friday.

Members of the team are Tanner Knust, Tucker Stewart, Sam Mace, Mitchell Howald, Liam Jones, Hunter Wolfe, Trevor Smith, Logan Ames, Seth Barrett, Landon Swearingen and Blake Mershon.

• Parke County Bullets prevail — At Rockville, the Parke County Bullets won the Kelly Hopkins Memorial Tournament for 10U baseball teams on Sunday.

Parke County defeated New Market (8-1), Crawfordsville (15-4), Terre Town (11-1) and Eagle Creek (11-0) in the championship game.

Golf

• Farris wins again -- At Brazil, Troy Farris pulled away from Eric Trusler on the final two holes Sunday to win his sixth straight Forest Park Club Championship.

Trusler trailed Farris by two shots following Saturday's first round and he and Farris were even after 16 holes on Sunday.

Farris finished with a 9-under-par 133 score to win his 10th club title. He had 10 birdies and one bogey in the two rounds.

Trusler was second with 136 and Kade Baker third at 139.

Jeff Gaskill won the first flight and Zac Clark took the second flight..

Steve Penman shot par golf, 142, to win the senior division and Jeff Eaglin took the first flight. Eaglin was the last player to win a championship other than Farris in 2003.

Ben Kiburis bested Bob England on the fourth playoff hole to take super senior honors while Olivia Oehler and Daniel Eaglin were junior winners.

Auto racing

• Bloom, Carmichael win — At Putnamville, Keith Bloom and Kenny Carmichael were two of the winners in racing Saturday at Lincoln Park Speedway.

The 16-year-old Bloom won his first sprint car feature while Carmichael took first in UMP modifieds. Carmichael also was seventh in the sprint main.

Shane Hollingsworth was second in the sprint feature.

Other feature winners were Slick Griffin in super stocks and Dustin Shoulders in bombers.

Next racing at the track will be August 1.
