Riley 8-and-under Cal Ripken team takes Ohio Valley Regional

Vincennes — The Riley Recreation League’s 8-and-under Cal Ripken baseball team won the Ohio Valley Regional on Monday night, finishing with a 6-1 record in the tournament.

Riley defeated a North Lexington, Ky., squad 7-5 in the championship Monday, avenging a loss to the same team during pool play.

“The Riley Rec. League has won a lot of state titles out there but this was the first Ohio Valley Regional title,” manager Scott Minton said.

The 8-and-unders are pitched to by coaches, but Minton said his squad hit 10 home runs out of the park during the Ohio Valley Regional. The Riley team has a 28-2 record and had already won the Central State Tournament at Shelbyville earlier this month.

Both tournaments had 18 teams participating, with the regional featuring top teams from Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.

“We were really just a really solid baseball team from top to bottom both at the plate and in the field. These guys have a high baseball IQ,” Minton said.
