TERRE HAUTE — The report from a criminal investigation of former professional boxer Terry Ray is now in the hands of a special prosecutor, who will determine whether criminal charges should be filed.

Putnam County Prosecutor Tim Bookwalter has accepted appointment as special prosecutor in the Vigo County case, and Tuesday he told the Tribune-Star that he has received the case report for review from the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department.

Bookwalter said he would review that report before deciding what charges, if any, to file against Ray, a former World Boxing Federation cruiserweight champion and a veteran of several nationally televised bouts. Ray is employed by the Federal Correctional Complex in Terre Haute.

In early March, Vigo County Prosecutor Terry Modesitt confirmed that Ray was under investigation for an alleged incident that occurred in February. Modesitt has said he doesn’t believe it would be appropriate to comment on the nature of the allegations because the matter remains under investigation.

Modesitt removed himself from the case because of a potential conflict of interest. Modesitt said his uncle is married to Ray’s mother.

Vigo Superior Court 3 Judge David Bolk appointed Bookwalter as special prosecutor.
