TERRE HAUTE — West Vigo and Otter Creek picked up first-round victories Monday night in the Vigo County eighth-grade girls basketball tournament at Honey Creek Middle School.
West Vigo beat Sarah Scott 24-18, with Lexus Elkins scoring nine points for the winners and Mariah Cheesman and Kathleen Hamblen getting six each for the Scotties.
Otter Creek downed Chauncey Rose 45-1 behind 12 points by Layne Curley. Shaylynne Butler had the only point for the Royals.
Play continues at 5 p.m. today at Honey Creek with the host Bees playing Woodrow Wilson. West Vigo and Otter Creek meet in the second game.
Championship game is 6 p.m. Thursday at Terre Haute South High School.
Baseball
• Maloney chosen — Rose-Hulman’s Nick Maloney has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for his efforts in Saturday’s win over Calvin.
Maloney helped propel the Engineers to a 12-1 victory in the nightcap of a doubleheader with his first career one-hitter in a complete-game performance. He allowed only a first-inning home run.
Maloney is 2-0 overall with a 1.50 earned run average this season. He has allowed just 12 hits and two earned runs in 12 innings of work.
Rose-Hulman, 8-2, returns to action Saturday at Marietta.
Golf
• First ace of season — At Hulman Links, Tom Jones recorded his 10th hole-in-one Sunday, using a 4-rescue on the 196-yard 13th hole. Witnesses were Tim Mundy and Mark Neaderhiser.
