TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State softball team earned a 3-1 win over Bryant on Thursday at the Rebel Games, improving their tournament run to 5-2 this week. With the victory, the Sycamores improved to 10-5 on the season.
Lindsey Beisser earned the complete-game win for ISU, scattering five hits and striking out six while walking two.
Sophomore Alyssa Marcum finished 2-for-3 on the day, while Beisser, MacKenzie Connelly and Stephanie Robinson each tallied a hit.
ISU jumped out early, scoring in the first inning with two outs. Alyssa Marcum singled to left, and Bailey Wittenauer drew a walk, followed by a Beisser double to center to score Marcum. Connelly then sent a single to left, scoring Wittenauer and putting the Sycamores up 2-0.
Bryant responded in the top of the fifth, plating one run by Lindsay Martin. ISU added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning, as Robinson started off with a single to center. Alyssa Doyle then sacrifice bunted, and Marcum singled to bring Robinson across.
ISU’s final game of the day against Wagner was cancelled due to rain, while Friday’s matchups with South Dakota and LaSalle were also rained out. The Sycamores return to action in their home opener at Price Field on Wednesday, hosting SEMO in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
Baseball
n ISU falls to host Flyers — At Dayton, Ohio, host University of Dayton jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and held on against a late rally from Indiana State to take the opening game of the Dayton Classic by a score of 8-4 on Friday at Time Cable Stadium.
The Flyers (5-8) plated three runs (one earned) in the bottom of the second inning, one more in the fourth and three more in the fifth to win their 2010 home opener.
Indiana State (7-5) attempted a comeback over the final three innings, scoring one run in the seventh and three more in the eighth, before Dayton closed out the game.
Junior Jacob Petricka (1-3) started the game for the Sycamores, tossing 4 2/3 innings on the mound. Petricka struck out three batters, while allowing four walks, eight hits and seven runs (five earned).
Senior Scott Harlan, sophomore Brandon Dorsett and sophomore Brandon Flora combined to pitch the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing just two Dayton hits.
ISU will play a noon doubleheader against Wright State on WSU’s campus today. Senior left-handed pitcher Joe Rodriguez and junior righty Jason Van Skike will start for ISU.

n Rose rained out — Rose-Hulman’s home opener on Fridayt against Calvin College has been cancelled due to rain.
The No. 16 ranked Fightin' Engineers stand 5-1 on the season and will attempt a doubleheader — two seven-inning games — against Calvin College beginning at noon today.
Rose will complete the weekend series with a matchup against Alma on Sunday at noon.

n TRC teams named — Tri-River all-conference teams for girls basketball have been announced.
North Central finished 5-0 to win the final girls basketball title in the league that will be disbanded after this year.
Clay City won a sectional and had two players on the first team.
