METRO ROUNDUP: Mullins wins Blues at the Crossroads half-marathon

TERRE HAUTE — Scott Mullins crossed the finish line first in the Blues at the Crossroads half-marathon that started and ended in downtown Terre Haute on Saturday.

His time was 1 hour, 10 minutes, 46.2 seconds. Some 366 runners competed.

Volleyball

• Engineers splits — At Greencastle, Rose-Hulman stands 8-5 for the season after defeating Olivet in three sets and falling to Hanover in four sets in the DePauw Invitational on Saturday.

The Engineers earned a 25-21, 26-24, 25-13 victory over Olivet to open play, then Hanover defeated Rose by a tight score of 25-27, 25-22, 26-24, 26-24 in the nightcap.

After the tournament, Rose-Hulman freshman Sarah Jensen earned a spot on the DePauw all-Invitational Team.

Against Olivet, junior Casey Levitt and senior Anna Lewer led the offensive attack with nine kills each. Jensen had a match high 17 assists and junior Kira Boswell had 16. Levitt recorded four aces and a team-high 14 digs, with junior Kate Dangel contributing a team-high 15 digs.

Jensen recorded her second triple-double of the season against Hanover with 13 kills, 14 assists and 17 digs. Lewer led five Engineers with double-figure digs with 27, followed by Jensen and Dangel with 17 each.

Offensively, Jensen and Lewer shared team-high honors with 13 kills. Boswell had 24 assists and freshmen Claire Raycraft and Anna Weber led the front-row defense with three blocks each.

Rose will return to Greencastle to square off against DePauw at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Soccer

• ISU women win — At Indianapolis, the Indiana State women’s team picked up its first road victory of the season Friday, jumping out to a two-goal lead over IUPUI in the first half before hanging late for a 2-1 win at Michael A. Carroll Track and Soccer Stadium.

The Sycamores took the lead in the 16th minute, using a header from freshman Elle Steele to get on the scoreboard. Junior Shelby Troyer sent a long ball from midfield toward the IUPUI goal, where it bounced once outside the penalty box. Steele and the IUPUI goalkeeper met at the top of the box, but Steele’s 5-inch height advantage allowed her to win the header before the collision and send the ball rolling across the goal line. The goal was Steele’s first at ISU.

The Sycamores (4-4-1) will return to Memorial Stadium today to take on Miami (Ohio) at 1 p.m. Indiana State also will host Youth Soccer Day with a free clinic taking place taking place 45 minutes before kickoff.

• Rose men win — At Jim Rendel Field, the Rose-Hulman men’s squad relied on two goals in a four-minute span of the first half to earn a 3-0 victory over Millikin on Saturday.

Junior B.J. Thompson opened the scoring with an unassisted tally in the 20th minute.

Four minutes later, Rose earned a penalty kick on a foul in the box and freshman Marco Cattani booted home his first college goal on the kick to make the score 2-0 at the half.

In the 84th minute, Rose-Hulman added an insurance goal to secure the victory. Junior William Senat had one shot blocked, then fired home the rebound for the score. Sophomore Daniel Koester made the pass in the box and was credited with an assist.

Junior Alec Houpt picked up the goalkeeping victory with his first collegiate shutout in a 90-minute performance.

Rose-Hulman (2-3-2) will return to action Wednesday at home against Fontbonne.

• Rose women draw — At Jim Rendel Field, the Rose-Hulman and Millikin women’s teams battled to a scoreless draw Saturday.

Rose freshman Lucinda Combs recorded 11 saves in goal to preserve her third shutout of the season.

Rose-Hulman (3-3-1) will play host to Fontbonne at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Millikin now has a 3-2-2 mark.

Golf

• Ace posted — At Mark’s Par Three, Tom Price of Terre Haute used an 8-iron to record a hole-in-one on the 125-yard No. 9 Friday.

Flo Johnson and Kenny Walsh witnessed the feat.

Auto racing

• Clauson wins Classic — At Bloomington, Bryan Clauson won the Fall Classic feature in Friday’s season finale at Bloomington Speedway.

Clauson won the Midwest Sprint Car Series feature with Robert Ballou second and Kyle Larson third. Other winners were Greg Amick in UMP modifieds, Troy Clark in UMP super stocks and Bryson Clark in hornets.
