METRO ROUNDUP: Engineers get 4 HCAC Player of the Week awards

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman student-athletes combined for four Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors, in results released Monday by the league.

The Engineers swept the two women's track and field athlete of the week awards. Junior Creasy Clauser was named HCAC Track Athlete of the Week, with junior Liz Evans winning Field Athlete of the Week honors.

Senior Stephan Lemmer captured HCAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week honors and baseball senior Jamie Weinle was named league Hitter of the Week.

Clauser recorded a pair of second-place finishes at the DePauw University Invitational on Saturday to earn Runner of the Week honors. She placed second in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:19.21 that ranks behind only her own school-record mark in Rose-Hulman history.  She also added a high jump leap of 4-feet-11 inches for second-place honors.

Evans won three events at the DePauw Invitational on Saturday to earn Field Athlete of the Week honors.  She claimed first-place recognition in the long jump (18-6 1/2), the high jump (5-7) and the triple jump (35-8 1/2).

Her high jump mark currently ranks No. 2 nationally in NCAA Division III this season, while the long jump distance stands 12th.  The long jump mark also set a new Rose-Hulman school record.

Lemmer helped key one of the best weeks in the history of Rose-Hulman men’s tennis.  The Engineers finished 5-0 over a six-day span last week to move to 5-4 on the season.

Lemmer compiled a perfect 5-0 record in singles play and in doubles play to emerge as the only Engineer to win all 10 matches last week.  He currently holds the No. 5 singles position for the Rose-Hulman team that is also 3-2 in league play.

Weinle batted .467 last week and slugged at an impressive 1.067 mark to help Rose-Hulman finish 3-2 in five games. He smashed three home runs in Saturday’s doubleheader against Mount St. Joseph, including a walk-off home run in game one and a grand slam in the second game. He finished 7-15 at the plate with five runs scored and nine RBI.

Auto racing

• Racing slated — U. S. Auto Club racing is slated in Terre Haute this weekend as the 2012 Mopar .25 Generation Next Tour opens its Dirt Triple Crown with round one.

Hosted by the Terre Haute Quarter Midget Association, the racing program is the first on the dirt this year for the Mopar .25 midget drivers.

Initial practice is slated Friday from 5 to 8 pm. Practice commences at 9 a.m. Saturday, followed by heats and lower mains. A-Mains are scheduled for Sunday starting at 9 a.m.

“Terre Haute has always been a special place for USAC and its participants and this weekend will be no different,” says USAC’s James Spink. “We’re just coming off a near-record car count on pavement in Nashville, Tenn., and we hope this weekend’s event is also indicative of the growth of our Mopar .25 operations. We look forward to a truly competitive event and a great battle for championships in the Dirt Triple Crown.
